Who's Hiring

Tips for Your Health And Safety Manager Internship Search
Apply in the fall for summer safety internships
Large employers in manufacturing, construction, and utilities open summer safety internship applications the preceding fall, sometimes as early as September. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to start dates. Check listings consistently from early fall onward so you do not miss the first application wave.
Build a project portfolio before you apply
Hiring teams reviewing health and safety manager intern candidates expect limited work history and look for documented projects instead. A completed job hazard analysis, an incident investigation report, or a safety program you developed for a class gives recruiters something concrete to assess. Include the scope, the standard or regulation you applied, and a link or attachment where possible.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Campus career fairs surface structured safety internship programs tied to your university, and professors with industry connections often know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to companies running smaller cohorts alongside your campus activity widens the pool you reach and keeps you from relying on a single channel.
Practice the health and safety manager intern interview format out loud
Safety intern interviews typically include scenario-based questions asking how you would respond to a specific hazard, conduct a site inspection, or handle a near-miss report. Practice answering out loud, walking through your reasoning step by step. Interviewers weigh how you think about risk and compliance as much as whether your final answer is correct.
Target structured safety internship pipelines early
Larger employers in industrial, chemical, and construction sectors run cohort-based safety internships designed to train people new to the field, often tied to rotational programs across compliance, industrial hygiene, and environmental health. These programs recruit in the first application wave and fill fast, so identify the ones that match your background and apply before the cohort closes.
Set your work-type filter before you start searching
On-site roles are 0% of the health and safety manager internships listed here, since safety work often requires physical site presence for inspections and audits. Decide what you can commit to before you start reviewing listings, then filter by location and work type on Migrate Mate so you are not sorting through roles you cannot take.
Health And Safety Manager Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a health and safety manager internship?
Lead with coursework and projects rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited experience at this level. A documented safety audit, incident investigation report, or hazard assessment you completed for a class gives recruiters something concrete to evaluate. Apply directly to employers running structured programs and attend campus career fairs, where recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a health and safety manager internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What drives it for health and safety manager interns is consistent performance on real work, like completing compliance audits independently, building relationships with the safety team, and understanding whether the employer has open headcount when your internship ends. Position for one, but do not count on it.
When should I apply for health and safety manager internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large employers, including manufacturing companies and construction firms with formal safety programs, recruit summer interns the preceding fall. Smaller companies and co-op programs post closer to start dates, so openings appear year-round. Checking listings regularly and applying as soon as roles open puts you ahead of candidates who wait until spring.
Are health and safety manager internships paid?
Most professional health and safety manager internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location. Where employers disclose pay, it appears on the listing. Nonprofit and government internships occasionally offer stipends rather than hourly wages, so read each posting carefully before applying.
What should a health and safety manager internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history. List two or three documented safety projects, naming the scope, the regulations or standards applied, and where the work can be reviewed, such as a linked incident report, a completed job hazard analysis, or a safety plan you developed for a class. Add relevant coursework, any OSHA certifications, and keep the resume to one page.
Are there remote health and safety manager internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 100% of the health and safety manager internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Safety roles often require physical site presence for inspections and audits, so remote options tend to focus on compliance, policy writing, or data analysis work. Remote cohorts fill fast, so apply early and filter by work type to see them.
What is an OSHA 30-hour internship program?
Some employers and industry groups offer structured internships specifically designed around OSHA 30-hour compliance training, pairing the certification with supervised field work in construction or general industry. These programs target students new to occupational safety, recruit competitively, and fill early each cycle. If you have not yet completed OSHA 30, starting it before you apply strengthens your candidacy.
Can international students get health and safety manager internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
