Tips for Your Psychologist Internship Search
Apply before the season you want to start
Large employers and formal doctoral programs recruit summer and fall psychologist interns the preceding fall, sometimes opening applications in September. Smaller practices and co-ops post much closer to start dates. Knowing which type of employer you are targeting tells you when to start watching for openings and building your materials.
Build a portfolio before you apply
Psychologist intern hiring teams expect limited work history. What gives them something concrete to assess is documented project work: assessment reports, research summaries, case conceptualizations, or data analyses with the instruments and methods named. Two or three complete, linked examples carry more weight than a long list of coursework alone.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Campus career fairs surface structured programs tied to your university, and professors and career center staff often know which employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to smaller practices and research labs running their own cohorts alongside campus activity widens the pool you reach without duplicating effort.
Practice explaining your clinical reasoning out loud
Psychologist intern interviews often include case vignettes or assessment scenarios where you walk through your diagnostic thinking in real time. Interviewers weigh how you reason through ambiguous situations as much as your final answer. Practice narrating your thought process out loud on realistic examples before your first interview, not during it.
Target APPIC and other structured internship pipelines early
Formal doctoral internship programs through APPIC, rotational placements at hospital systems, and university-affiliated training clinics are built specifically to train people entering the field. They recruit on fixed timelines, fill their cohorts early, and can be competitive. Identify the programs that match your training goals and submit materials in the first application wave.
Set your work-type filter before you start searching
On-site roles are 100% of the psychologist internships listed here. Decide what you can realistically commit to before sorting through openings, then filter by location and work type on Migrate Mate so every role you spend time on is one you can actually accept.
Psychologist Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a psychologist internship?
Lead with coursework and documented case projects rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. The concrete artifact that gives recruiters something to assess is a portfolio of practicum work, assessment write-ups, or research reports. Combine direct applications with campus career fairs, where program coordinators and recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a psychologist internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it for psychologist interns is consistent performance on real client or research work, available headcount on the team at the end of the placement, and how early you signal interest in returning. Position for a return offer by treating every assignment as a demonstration of clinical or research judgment, without counting on the outcome.
When should I apply for psychologist internships?
Earlier than most expect. Large employers and formal doctoral internship programs recruit for summer and fall cohorts the preceding fall, sometimes as early as September or October. Smaller practices, research labs, and co-op arrangements post much closer to start dates, so openings appear year-round. Checking listings consistently and having your application materials ready before a role posts keeps you competitive across both cycles.
Are psychologist internships paid?
Most professional psychologist internships in the United States are paid. Compensation varies by employer size, setting, and location, with academic medical centers, hospital systems, and large research organizations generally offering structured stipends, while smaller private practices vary more widely. Listings show compensation where the employer discloses it, so you can compare what is available as you search.
What should a psychologist internship resume include?
Lead with projects, not work history: two or three documented clinical, research, or assessment projects naming the populations served, instruments used, and where reviewers can see the work, such as a linked research report, published analysis, or case study summary. Add relevant coursework in assessment, statistics, and clinical methods. Keep the entire document to one page.
Are there remote psychologist internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 0% of the psychologist internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast as candidates nationally compete for the same openings, so apply early and filter by work type to see them as soon as they post.
What is an APPIC internship for psychology students?
The Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) match is the primary structured placement system for doctoral-level psychology interns in the United States. It targets students completing APA-accredited graduate programs, pairs them with accredited training sites in hospitals and community centers, and operates on a formal application and match timeline. The process is competitive and opens early in the academic year, so submit materials in the first application wave.
Can international students get psychologist internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
