Tips for Your Respiratory Therapist Internship Search
Apply earlier than your instincts suggest
Large hospital systems and healthcare networks open summer internship applications the preceding fall, often in September or October. Smaller clinics and co-op programs post closer to start dates. Check listings consistently through the academic year so you don't miss the first wave at programs that matter to you.
Build a clinical evidence file before you apply
Without professional work history, your proof is your coursework and lab work. Document two or three clinical simulation projects or practicals: name the equipment you used, the protocols you followed, and the patient scenarios you practiced. A written case study or clinical log excerpt gives recruiters a concrete artifact to evaluate for respiratory therapist candidates.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Campus career fairs surface structured internship programs tied to your university, and your respiratory therapy faculty and career center staff often know which healthcare employers recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Applying directly to smaller clinics and specialty practices running their own cohorts alongside campus activity expands the pool you reach.
Practice your clinical reasoning interview out loud
Respiratory therapist intern screens often include scenario-based questions where you walk through how you'd assess a patient, adjust ventilator settings, or respond to a deteriorating case. Practice answering out loud and narrating your clinical reasoning step by step, since interviewers weigh how you think through the problem as much as the answer you land on.
Target structured healthcare internship pipelines early
Large hospital networks and integrated health systems run formal rotational or cohort internship programs built to train people new to respiratory therapy. These programs recruit early, fill their first cohorts fast, and offer exposure across multiple units. Identify the programs that fit your program year and apply in the first application window.
Set your work-type filter before you start
On-site roles are 100% of the respiratory therapist internships listed here. Decide what you can realistically commit to before you search, then filter by location and work type so you're only reviewing roles you can actually take. Sorting through on-site postings in cities you can't relocate to wastes application cycles.
Respiratory Therapist Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a respiratory therapist internship?
Lead with coursework and clinical skills, not work history, since hiring teams expect limited professional experience at the intern level. A documented skills portfolio showing competency with respiratory assessment techniques and equipment gives recruiters something concrete to evaluate. Pair direct applications with campus career fairs, where respiratory therapy program recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a respiratory therapist internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What drives it for respiratory therapist interns is consistent clinical performance, dependability on the floor, and whether the department has open headcount at the time your internship ends. Treat the internship as an extended audition without counting on an offer at the end.
When should I apply for respiratory therapist internships?
Earlier than most expect. Large hospital systems and healthcare networks recruit summer interns the preceding fall, sometimes as early as September or October. Smaller clinics, specialty practices, and co-op programs post closer to their actual start dates, so openings appear year-round and checking regularly pays off.
Are respiratory therapist internships paid?
Most professional respiratory therapist internships in the United States are paid. Compensation varies by employer size, industry setting, and location, with hospital systems and large healthcare organizations typically offering structured stipends or hourly rates. Listings show pay where the employer discloses it, so filter accordingly.
What should a respiratory therapist internship resume include?
Lead with projects and clinical coursework, not work history. Include two or three documented clinical simulation projects or lab practicals that name the equipment operated, protocols applied, and patient populations studied. A case study write-up or clinical log excerpt gives recruiters a role-specific artifact to assess. Keep it to one page.
Are there remote respiratory therapist internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 0% of the respiratory therapist internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts in areas like health informatics, telehealth support, and respiratory data analysis fill fast, so apply early and filter by work type to see them.
Can international students get respiratory therapist internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
