Who's Hiring

Tips for Your Licensed Therapist Internship Search
Apply earlier than the role posting suggests
Large hospital systems, behavioral health networks, and community mental health organizations recruit summer licensed therapist interns the preceding fall, often before most candidates realize the cycle has opened. Smaller practices and co-op placements post closer to start dates. Checking listings consistently means you catch structured cohorts before they fill and still see rolling opportunities throughout the year.
Build a clinical portfolio before you apply
Hiring reviewers for licensed therapist intern roles expect limited work history, so give them something concrete to assess. Document two or three supervised practicum experiences or coursework projects with the population served, modalities used, and direct clinical hours completed. Anonymized session notes, treatment plan samples, or case conceptualization write-ups are the role-specific proof that moves a licensed therapist intern application forward.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Campus career fairs surface structured practicum partnerships tied to your program, and your practicum coordinator or faculty supervisor often knows which sites recruit from your school before openings post publicly. Applying directly to agencies and practices running smaller cohorts alongside campus activity reaches employers that never attend fairs, widening the pool you can realistically land in.
Practice your intern screen out loud before your first interview
Licensed therapist intern interviews typically involve clinical vignettes, role-plays, or case conceptualization exercises where interviewers assess how you think through a presenting problem, not just the answer you land on. Practice articulating your clinical reasoning out loud, explaining your approach to differential assessment and treatment planning, since supervisors are evaluating your thinking process as much as your conclusion.
Target structured supervised training programs at larger organizations
Hospital systems, large community behavioral health agencies, and university training clinics often run formal internship cohorts built to train clinicians new to the field, including rotational placements that expose you to multiple populations or modalities. These programs recruit early and fill in the first application wave, so identify the ones that match your licensure track and apply as soon as they open.
Set your work-type filter before you start searching
On-site roles are 60% of the licensed therapist internships listed here. Some training programs and licensure boards require in-person supervised hours, which limits which listings actually fit. Decide what your program will accept before sorting through openings, then filter by location and work type so every role you spend time on is one you can commit to.
Licensed Therapist Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a licensed therapist internship?
Lead with coursework and documented case conceptualizations or practicum projects rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited clinical experience at the intern level. A portfolio of session notes, assessment summaries, or supervised case studies gives reviewers something concrete to evaluate. Pair direct applications with campus career fairs, where practicum coordinators and recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can a licensed therapist internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. What actually drives it for licensed therapist interns is consistent clinical performance, fit with the team's caseload needs, and whether the site has approved headcount when your internship ends. Position for a return offer by treating every session and documentation task as evaluated work, without building your plans around an outcome that depends on factors outside your control.
When should I apply for licensed therapist internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large hospital systems, community mental health networks, and behavioral health companies recruit summer interns the preceding fall, sometimes before the academic year is fully underway. Smaller practices and co-op placements post closer to start dates, so openings appear year-round. Checking listings regularly means you catch both waves rather than missing the early cohorts.
Are licensed therapist internships paid?
Most professional licensed therapist internships in the United States are paid, though compensation varies by company size, industry, and location. Academic training placements tied to degree requirements sometimes operate on a stipend or unpaid basis, particularly where clinical hours count toward licensure. Listings show compensation where the employer discloses it, so you can compare before you apply.
What should a licensed therapist internship resume include?
Lead with projects and practicum experience, not general work history. Document two or three supervised clinical placements or coursework projects with the population served, the modalities used, and the number of direct clinical hours completed. Linked case study summaries or anonymized treatment plan samples give reviewers something concrete to assess for licensed therapist candidates. Add relevant coursework, keep the document to one page, and list any assessments or evidence-based protocols you have been trained in.
Are there remote licensed therapist internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 40% of the licensed therapist internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Remote cohorts fill fast as telehealth placements have grown in availability, so apply early once you decide what format fits your training requirements. Filter by work type to see only the listings that match what your program and licensure board will accept for supervised hours.
What is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) associate internship?
An LPC associate internship is a structured supervised experience designed for candidates who have completed their graduate degree but need post-degree clinical hours toward full licensure. These placements are built to train clinicians new to independent practice under a licensed supervisor, they recruit on a rolling basis and fill quickly at well-regarded sites, so identify qualifying placements early and apply in the first round of openings.
Can international students get licensed therapist internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
