Who's Hiring

Tips for Your Environmental Health And Safety Manager Internship Search
Apply in the fall for summer EHS internships
Large manufacturers, energy companies, and chemical firms open their summer EHS intern cohorts as early as September. Waiting until spring means the most structured programs are already filled. Smaller companies and co-op rotations post closer to start dates, so keep checking throughout the year rather than treating it as a single season.
Build a portfolio before you apply
EHS recruiters at the intern level want proof of applied knowledge, not a long work history. Document two or three projects from coursework or campus safety committees: a written hazard assessment, an incident investigation report, or a compliance audit. Note the standards you applied, such as OSHA regulations or EPA guidelines, and make the work shareable so recruiters can actually review it.
Work your campus network and apply directly at the same time
Career fairs surface structured EHS programs tied specifically to your university, and your professors or campus career center often know which local plants or agencies recruit from your school before roles post publicly. Apply directly to companies running smaller cohorts alongside your campus activity so you're not limited to employers who attend your fair.
Practice your technical screen out loud before interviews
EHS intern interviews typically include a scenario-based screen where you walk through how you would respond to a workplace incident, conduct a site inspection, or interpret a regulation. Practice your answers out loud, explaining your reasoning step by step. Interviewers weigh how you think through a safety problem as much as the final answer you reach.
Target structured EHS rotational programs early
Large manufacturers, utilities, and chemical companies run formal EHS internship rotational programs designed to train people new to the field. These cohorts cycle through safety, environmental compliance, and industrial hygiene, giving you broader exposure than a single-team placement. They recruit in the fall and fill fast, so identify the programs that match your degree focus and apply in the first wave.
Set your work-type filter before you start searching
On-site roles are 0% of the environmental health and safety manager internships listed here, since much of the work involves physical site inspections and facility walkthroughs. Decide what you can commit to before you start sorting listings so you're not spending time on roles you cannot actually take, then filter by location and work type on Migrate Mate to see only what fits.
Environmental Health And Safety Manager Internships: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get an environmental health and safety manager internship?
Lead with coursework and projects rather than work history, since hiring teams expect limited experience at the intern level. The concrete artifact that gives EHS recruiters something to assess is a documented safety audit, incident analysis report, or hazard assessment you completed in a class or campus project. Pair direct applications with campus career fairs, where EHS recruiters often move faster for students they meet in person.
Can an environmental health and safety manager internship turn into a full-time job?
Many employers extend return offers to strong interns, but conversion is never guaranteed. For EHS interns, what drives it most is performance on real compliance or safety projects, available headcount on the team, and whether you express interest before the return-offer window closes. Position yourself by delivering measurable work and treating every assignment as an audition, without counting on the outcome.
When should I apply for environmental health and safety manager internships?
Earlier than most candidates expect. Large manufacturers, chemical companies, and government contractors recruit summer EHS interns the preceding fall, sometimes as early as September or October. Smaller firms and co-op programs post much closer to start dates, so openings appear year-round. Checking listings consistently rather than waiting for a single recruiting season gives you the widest window.
Are environmental health and safety manager internships paid?
Most professional EHS internships in the U.S. are paid. Compensation varies by company size, industry, and location, and listings show it where the employer chooses to disclose it. Government and nonprofit placements may be stipend-based or unpaid, so check each listing carefully before applying.
What should an environmental health and safety manager internship resume include?
Lead with two or three complete, documented projects rather than work history. For EHS candidates, that means safety audits, hazard assessments, incident investigation write-ups, or regulatory compliance exercises, each listing the tools used (EHS management software, risk matrices, OSHA standards applied) and where a recruiter can review the work. Add relevant coursework, any OSHA certifications, and keep the whole document to one page.
Are there remote environmental health and safety manager internships?
Yes. Remote and hybrid roles make up 100% of the environmental health and safety manager internship listings here, with the rest on-site. Because EHS work often involves physical site inspections, remote cohorts tend to focus on compliance documentation, data analysis, and policy development. Remote cohorts fill fast, so apply early and filter by work type to see them.
What is an OSHA outreach internship or EHS rotational program?
Several large manufacturers, utilities, and chemical companies run structured EHS rotational internship programs that move participants through safety, environmental compliance, and industrial hygiene teams over one or two summers. These programs are built specifically for students new to the field, recruit early in the fall semester, and are competitive. Identify the ones that align with your degree focus and apply in the first wave of each cycle.
Can international students get environmental health and safety manager internships?
Yes. F-1 students can intern through CPT while enrolled or through OPT work authorization after finishing a degree, and the employer does not have to file anything for either, so many companies are open to international interns. Confirm your eligibility and timing with your university's international student office before accepting an offer.
