Most hiring managers expect at least a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, combined with cloud platform certifications such as AWS Certified Data Engineer or Google Professional Data Engineer. South Carolina's large healthcare and financial services employers often prefer candidates who can demonstrate hands-on pipeline work through a portfolio or prior project experience.
How much do cloud data engineers make in South Carolina?
Cloud data engineers in South Carolina earn a median of about $130,000 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $84,300 for the lowest 10% to over $183,700 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cloud data engineers in South Carolina?
Companies currently hiring cloud data engineers in South Carolina include LPL Financial, Leidos, and AFL, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Carolina's financial services sector, anchored by institutions like BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, and its growing advanced manufacturing base consistently generate some of the state's most stable cloud data engineering demand.
Which South Carolina cities have the most cloud data engineer jobs?
Charleston, Fort Mill, and South Carolina hold the most cloud data engineer openings in South Carolina. Columbia leads because it is home to major healthcare payers, state government technology agencies, and financial services headquarters, while the Charleston area draws demand from aerospace, logistics, and defense contractors, and the York County communities bordering Charlotte benefit from spillover hiring from large regional operations based just across the state line.

About 67% of cloud data engineer openings tied to South Carolina are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how broadly employers have adopted flexible work for this role. Pipeline development, data modeling, and cloud infrastructure work are the functions most commonly offered with full location flexibility.

BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina and state government agencies in Columbia post associate-level data roles that function as structured entry points. Building a portfolio of end-to-end pipeline projects using AWS or Azure free tiers and earning an entry-level cloud certification gives candidates from adjacent roles such as data analyst or database administrator a credible foot in the door.
