Cloud Security Architect Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a cloud security architect in Virginia?
Cloud security architects in Virginia follow a path that combines technical credentials with security clearance eligibility, since defense and federal contracting dominate the market. Most employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science or information security, followed by several years in cloud engineering or cybersecurity. Earning a CISSP or CCSP certification significantly strengthens a candidate's standing. Virginia has no state-issued license for this role, but obtaining or maintaining a federal security clearance is effectively a prerequisite for the majority of available positions.
How much do cloud security architects make in Virginia?
Cloud security architects in Virginia earn a median of about $141,340 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $85,050 for the lowest 10% to over $210,180 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire cloud security architects in Virginia?
Employers hiring cloud security architects in Virginia right now include Booz Allen Hamilton, Freddie Mac, and AMERICAN SYSTEMS, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Northern Virginia's dense concentration of defense contractors, federal systems integrators, and intelligence community vendors makes it one of the most active hiring environments for this role in the country.
Which Virginia cities have the most cloud security architect jobs?
Reston, Chantilly, and McLean account for the largest share of cloud security architect openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia cities like Arlington and Reston drive the bulk of demand because of their proximity to the Pentagon, federal civilian agencies, and a dense cluster of defense contractors and cloud service providers, while Richmond draws hiring from financial institutions and state government technology offices.
Are there remote cloud security architect jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most technical fields, since cloud security architecture is largely a design and advisory function that does not require on-site hardware access. About 0% of cloud security architect openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, though clearance-dependent roles often require periodic on-site presence. Architecture, compliance assessment, and cloud strategy work are the sub-areas most likely to be conducted fully remotely.
How can I get hired as a cloud security architect in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into the role from a cloud engineering or cybersecurity analyst position, both of which are widely available in Virginia's defense and federal IT market. Large Virginia employers like Booz Allen Hamilton and Leidos regularly hire associate or junior security engineers into programs that develop cloud security skills on the job. Earning a foundational certification such as the CompTIA Security+ or AWS Cloud Practitioner, paired with initiating the federal security clearance process early, gives candidates without direct architecture experience a concrete edge when applying.
Where can I find and apply to cloud security architect jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to cloud security architect jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across defense contractors, federal agencies, and commercial technology employers. Find a role that fits and apply directly.
