Commissioning Engineer Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a commissioning engineer job in Chicago?
Focus your search on Chicago's dominant hiring sectors: commercial construction and building systems in the Loop, power and utility infrastructure on the city's industrial corridors, and manufacturing automation in the surrounding Cook County and DuPage County suburbs. Employers here respond well to candidates with direct hands-on startup experience, BAS or controls knowledge, and familiarity with LEED or ASHRAE commissioning standards. Targeting mechanical and electrical contractors and large facility operators gives you the broadest access to open roles.
Which companies hire commissioning engineers in Chicago?
Chicago commissioning engineer roles are posted by CAI, Burns & McDonnell, and Nexamp and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. The local market includes a mix of large engineering and construction firms, building automation integrators, utility and energy companies, and industrial equipment manufacturers with facilities in and around the Chicago metro.
Are there remote commissioning engineer jobs in Chicago?
Yes, but only partially. Commissioning engineering is predominantly hands-on work, and most roles require on-site presence for equipment startup, testing, and verification. About 38% of commissioning engineer openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be project management, documentation, or design review functions rather than field commissioning work.
How can I get a commissioning engineer job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is through a field technician or building automation technician role with one of the city's many mechanical or electrical contractors. Firms that service commercial high-rises in the Loop and hospital campuses on the Near North Side regularly hire entry-level candidates for hands-on systems work that builds commissioning fundamentals. Earning a certification such as the AABC Certified Commissioning Authority or a controls vendor credential from Honeywell, Johnson Controls, or Siemens while working in a support role accelerates the move into a full commissioning title.
Which industries hire the most commissioning engineers in Chicago?
Chicago commissioning engineer roles concentrate in Technology & Software, Consulting & Professional Services, and Construction & Real Estate, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's dense commercial real estate base, significant healthcare and laboratory campus presence, and proximity to major industrial manufacturing hubs in the broader metro all sustain consistent demand for commissioning professionals across those sectors.
