Tips for Your Communications Associate Job Search
Tailor your resume to each channel
Communications roles are specialized by function, so a resume built for media relations won't read the same as one for internal communications. Swap out bullet points and keyword clusters to match the specific discipline each posting targets, not just the title.
Build a portfolio before you apply
Hiring managers for communications associate roles expect writing samples, press releases, or campaign recaps. Collect three to five pieces that show range across formats, whether that's a social post, a bylined article, or an internal memo, and link them in your application.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists communications associate openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Match your language to the sector
A nonprofit communications associate posting uses words like stewardship, donor outreach, and earned media, while a corporate role emphasizes messaging frameworks and stakeholder engagement. Mirror the vocabulary in the job description throughout your resume and cover letter to pass applicant tracking systems.
Prepare a clips-and-metrics story
In interviews, expect to walk through a specific project end to end. Know what the goal was, what you wrote or produced, and what happened after, whether open rates climbed, press coverage landed, or leadership changed how it communicated. Concrete outcomes outperform general descriptions.
Negotiate using scope, not just title
Communications associate offers vary more by team size and responsibility than by title alone. Before accepting, ask directly how many channels you own, whether you draft independently or edit others' work, and what the promotion timeline looks like. That context shapes whether the offer fits your goals.
Communications Associate Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most communications associates?
The companies hiring the most communications associates right now include Infusemedia, Collabera, and Sony Music Entertainment, with the largest share of openings in New York, California, and Massachusetts, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Nonprofit organizations, healthcare systems, and large corporations tend to post the highest volume of communications associate roles consistently.
How many communications associate jobs are remote?
About 35% of communications associate openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible roles in the marketing and communications field. Social media management, content writing, and media monitoring sub-functions tend to have the highest share of remote-eligible postings compared to event-focused or executive communications roles.
How do you become a communications associate?
Most communications associates start with a bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or English, then build practical experience through internships, campus media, or freelance writing. Developing a portfolio of published or produced work is essential before applying. Familiarity with media monitoring platforms and AP Style accelerates your candidacy, and many candidates break in through agency internships or nonprofit coordinator roles before moving into associate positions.
Can you get hired as a communications associate with little experience?
Yes, entry-level communications associate roles exist and are often designed for candidates just out of college, provided you have relevant writing samples and some practical exposure. Internship experience, student newspaper clips, campus social media management, or volunteer PR work for a nonprofit all count. Roles at smaller organizations and nonprofits are generally more open to candidates building their first professional portfolio than large corporate communications teams.
What does the communications associate interview process look like?
Communications associate interviews typically begin with a recruiter screen covering your background and availability, followed by a hiring manager conversation that focuses on specific writing projects and how you handled competing deadlines. Most employers include a writing or editing exercise, sometimes a timed press release or social post draft. Final rounds often involve meeting team members and discussing how you'd approach the organization's current communications priorities.
Where can I find and apply to communications associate jobs?
You can find and apply to communications associate jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your background and target sector, and apply directly to each listing without leaving the platform.
