SUMMARY
The Athletics Communications Assistant, working in concert with the Athletics Communications Director, markets and promotes Luther College through its NCAA Division III athletics programs, promoting the Luther brand through the stories of its student-athletes and the values that athletics brings to the student experience, the campus, and the community. The Assistant Director will assist with student worker mentoring and direction, social media engagement, athletics storytelling, and event coverage and follow-up reporting and promotions during overlapping home athletic events.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the Director in media relations, website maintenance, livestreaming, game management and in-game scorekeeping, statistical reporting, photography and image management, record keeping, and other duties as assigned.
- Train, mentor, and supervise student workers.
- Collaborate and coordinate with other members of the Division of Communication, including the Digital Media team and the social media coordinator.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist the Director in the supervision and training of a student work study staff of 14-21 students who are essential in covering Luther athletic events.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and SKILLS:
- Bachelor’s degree
- Experience in athletics marketing and communications at a professional or student level required.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Basic software skills required in the Adobe Creative Suite including InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat; as well as Excel and Microsoft Word.
- Supervisory experience at athletic events is preferred.
- Knowledge of in-game statistical programs used for both gathering of event statistics as well as live streaming of statistical data. Knowledge of sport appropriate rules, statistical policies and guidelines including NCAA statistical manuals or other governing body for all sponsored varsity sports.
- Video streaming and athletic photography experience preferred.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and friends of the college.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Flexibility to work on weekends and evenings required in accordance with athletic season schedules.
- Combination of indoor desk environment and outdoor work environments in diverse weather conditions.
- Lifting and carrying equipment of up to 20 pounds.
- Walking, standing, and climbing stairs.
- Visual acuity necessary for scoring and statistical compilations at events.
