Align your credentials to Amazon's bar
Amazon engineering interviews are structured around leadership principles and technical depth. Before applying, document projects where you owned system design decisions or improved scale, not just contributed. Interviewers assess both coding proficiency and engineering judgment.
Target teams that match your visa type
Amazon sponsors H-1B, E-3, and H-1B1 visas, but not every team moves at the same pace. Roles in AWS, Alexa, and core retail engineering typically have established sponsorship workflows, making them lower-friction targets for international candidates early in their search.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles
Amazon posts engineering positions across dozens of sub-teams simultaneously. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Amazon engineering roles that align with your visa type, so you're applying where sponsorship is already in scope rather than discovering that after an offer.
Negotiate your start date around H-1B timing
If you need an H-1B cap filing, the annual April lottery window is fixed. Build your job search timeline so offers can be extended before March, giving Amazon's immigration team enough runway to prepare your petition before the USCIS registration deadline.
Get your documentation in order before the offer stage
Amazon's legal team moves quickly once an offer is extended. Have your degree transcripts, any prior I-94 records, and previous visa approval notices organized and accessible. Gaps or inconsistencies in employment history slow down the USCIS petition preparation process.

Find Engineering at Amazon JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Amazon sponsor H-1B visas for Engineers?
Yes, Amazon sponsors H-1B visas for engineering roles across its business units, including AWS, advertising, and retail technology. Sponsorship is handled through Amazon's in-house immigration team. If you're subject to the H-1B cap, your petition would be filed in the annual April lottery window, so timing your offer accordingly is important.
How do I apply for Engineering jobs at Amazon?
You can search Amazon's careers portal directly or use Migrate Mate to browse Amazon engineering roles filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility. Amazon's engineering interview process typically involves an online assessment, followed by multiple rounds covering coding, system design, and behavioral questions tied to Amazon's leadership principles. Preparing for all three components before applying improves your throughput through the funnel.
Which visa types does Amazon sponsor for Engineering roles?
Amazon sponsors H-1B, H-1B1, and E-3 visas for engineering positions, as well as employment-based Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3. H-1B1 is available to Chilean and Singaporean nationals, while E-3 is exclusive to Australian citizens. Each visa type has different filing requirements and timelines, so identifying which category applies to you early helps you plan around Amazon's offer process.
What qualifications does Amazon typically expect for Engineering roles?
Amazon engineering roles generally require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related technical field. For software development and systems roles, proficiency in at least one compiled language and experience with distributed systems are standard expectations. Senior and principal-level roles require demonstrated ownership of large-scale technical projects and cross-functional delivery experience.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take after an Amazon engineering offer?
Timeline depends on your visa category. For E-3 and H-1B1 petitions, consular processing typically takes two to six weeks after Amazon files the supporting documentation. H-1B petitions for cap-subject candidates take longer since they're tied to the annual lottery. USCIS premium processing is available and reduces adjudication time to 15 business days once the petition is filed.
