Job Description
Who You’ll Work With
As a Layer1 software engineer, you will get to work on software that manages the physical layer, where packets meet the outside world. Stable and reliable physical connectivity is critical for any network and that is your challenge. You will get to write control software that brings to life everything from the ubiquitous 1GBASE-T connectors to 1.6T long reach optics that provide fiber connectivity across continents. Your software will need to work across a wide variety of forwarding engines, connectors and interface chips called gearboxes, which allow our hardware platforms to support diverse physical connectivity options within a product family. You will build instrumentation and telemetry tools that track physical link health parameters reported by the Layer1 components and enable operators to monitor and troubleshoot their links effectively. You will also work closely with our Optics teams to define standards for new media and bring them to market.
Arista Software Engineering roles demand a strong and broad software engineering background. While the primary focus area for this role is Layer1 software, the role will cover all aspects of software development spanning the addition of new features, debugging problems and fine tuning code for scalability and performance. You will own your projects from definition to deployment and customer interactions, and you will be responsible for the quality of everything you deliver.
Arista Software Engineering prides itself on a supportive and growth oriented culture. Over time, as your interests change, coupled with evolving business needs you will have the opportunity to switch from Layer1 to other areas, if you like.
What You’ll Do
- Interface with customers, product management and hardware engineers to come up with innovative new Layer1 features.
- Architect, design and manage the development of these features.
- Develop and maintain features using C, C++ and Python, review and contribute to functional and design specifications. Build automated tests and test infrastructure to test the features.
- Work with hardware and manufacturing teams to bring new Layer1 components like Phys and Transceivers to market.
- Collaborate with hardware engineers to design optimal software control interfaces for managing Layer1 components.
- Provide technical leadership across features, projects and tools.
- Work with Customer Support Engineers and customers to analyze, mitigate and fix problems in customer networks.
- Work with the System Test Engineers to analyze problems found in their tests and provide fixes for those problems.
- Mentor new and junior engineers to bring them up to speed in Arista's software development environment.
Qualifications
- BS Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering + 8 years experience, or MS Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering + 6 years experience, or Ph.D. in Computer Science/Electrical Engineering/Computer Engineering + 3 years experience, or equivalent work experience
- Expert knowledge of C or C++ and Python.
- Knowledge of UNIX or Linux
- Knowledge of digital communication technologies like modulation and signal encoding schemes is a plus.
- Understanding of IP networking and/or distributed systems is a plus
- Experience working with low level hardware components is a plus
- Applied understanding of software engineering principles
- Strong problem solving and software troubleshooting skills
- Ability to design a solution and implement features independently.
- Ability to work in small teams.

Align your experience to EOS platform depth
Arista's senior engineering roles consistently require deep experience with distributed systems, network operating systems, or cloud infrastructure. Tailor your resume to reflect low-level systems work or protocol engineering, not just general software development, before applying.
Verify your OPT timeline before accepting offers
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm how many months remain before your offer start date. Arista's onboarding and background checks can take four to six weeks, so a tight OPT window may require STEM OPT extension paperwork to run concurrently with your hiring process.
Search Arista's open roles through Migrate Mate
Filter Senior Software Engineering positions at Arista Networks on Migrate Mate to see which roles are actively open and visa-sponsorship eligible. This saves time you'd otherwise spend cross-referencing job boards with sponsorship history manually.
Ask recruiters specifically about H-1B cap timing
H-1B cap-subject petitions have an April 1 filing window and an October 1 start date. If your offer comes outside that window, confirm whether Arista will file for the next cap season or bridge your status through a cap-exempt arrangement while you wait.
Request confirmation of PERM sponsorship willingness early
EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM is common at technology companies for senior engineers, but timelines vary by employer policy. Ask during the offer stage whether Arista initiates PERM after a defined tenure, so you can plan your long-term status accordingly.
Prepare documentation showing specialized systems knowledge
USCIS scrutinizes H-1B specialty occupation petitions for software roles. Documentation like patents, publications, or detailed project descriptions involving proprietary networking protocols or systems architecture strengthens the petition and reduces the risk of a Request for Evidence.

Find Senior Software Engineering at Arista Networks JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Arista Networks sponsor H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineers?
Yes, Arista Networks sponsors H-1B visas for Senior Software Engineering roles. The company has a consistent history of filing H-1B petitions for engineering talent across its networking and cloud product lines. If you're cap-subject, petitions must be filed in the April lottery window with an October 1 start date. If you already hold H-1B status with another employer, Arista can file a transfer petition at any point in the year.
How do I apply for Senior Software Engineering jobs at Arista Networks?
You can browse and apply for Senior Software Engineering roles at Arista Networks directly through their careers portal or by finding open positions on Migrate Mate, which filters for roles with active visa sponsorship. Before applying, align your resume to Arista's technical focus areas, particularly distributed systems, network OS development, or cloud infrastructure, as these map most directly to their senior engineering needs.
Which visa types does Arista Networks commonly use for Senior Software Engineering roles?
Arista Networks sponsors H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT visas for Senior Software Engineering positions, and supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for longer-term employees. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. F-1 CPT is typically limited to current students completing co-ops or internships, while OPT supports post-graduation full-time employment.
What qualifications does Arista Networks expect for Senior Software Engineering roles?
Senior Software Engineering roles at Arista typically require a bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a closely related field, along with several years of experience in systems-level programming, network protocols, or distributed systems. USCIS requires that H-1B roles qualify as specialty occupations, meaning the position must normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical discipline, which Arista's senior engineering roles generally satisfy.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Senior Software Engineering role at Arista Networks?
Timeline depends on your visa type. H-1B standard processing through USCIS takes four to six months from filing; premium processing reduces that to roughly two to three weeks for an additional government fee. TN status for Canadians can be obtained at the border on the same day. If you're pursuing a Green Card through PERM, the DOL labor certification stage alone can take 12 to 18 months before USCIS petition filing begins.
