OUR OPPORTUNITY:
Chewy Pharmacy Operations relies on timely, trusted data to deliver safe, efficient, and world class customer experience across Vet Services and Rx Fulfillment teams. We are looking for a Business Intelligence Engineer III (C06) to build scalable data foundations and deliver clear analytics and visualizations that help operators understand performance and act. This role blends data pipeline ownership, building and maintaining repeatable reporting mechanisms, and deep-dive analysis in partnership with Operations, Operations Support, and Technology teams.
WHAT YOU’LL DO:
- Design, develop, implement, test, document, and operate large-scale data models and BI solutions, including curated datasets, dashboards, and recurring reporting that support Pharmacy Operations.
- Build and maintain data ingestion and transformation routines (batch and, where needed, near real-time) using best practices in data modeling and ETL/ELT to ensure reliable, scalable pipelines.
- Deliver self-serve reporting and analysis through BI tools and well-structured semantic/abstraction layers that enable consistent metrics across multiple source systems.
- Gather business and functional requirements and translate them into robust, scalable, operable solutions that align with broader data architecture and downstream consumption patterns.
- Produce high-quality documentation, metadata, and clear metric definitions to improve trust, adoption, and long-term maintainability of Pharmacy Operations analytics products.
- Perform deep-dive analysis and root-cause investigations to explain performance trends, quantify impact, and recommend operational actions.
- Mentor and support other analysts by providing guidance on best practices, reviewing work for quality and consistency, and helping teammates strengthen skills in data modeling, visualization, and stakeholder communication.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Analytics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of experience in Business Intelligence, Analytics Engineering, or Data Engineering roles delivering analytics solutions (for example dashboards, reporting, and curated datasets) for business teams.
- Proven experience designing and owning enterprise-grade data pipelines and data models spanning multiple business domains, including complex joins across multiple source systems, incremental processing, and handling late-arriving data.
- Strong SQL proficiency, including query optimization and building performant data models in a modern cloud data warehouse (Snowflake or equivalent).
- Solid knowledge of data warehouse concepts and methodologies, including dimensional modeling and designing curated data marts for downstream BI consumption.
- Experience building governed BI solutions and presenting insights clearly through visualizations (Tableau or comparable BI tool).
- Experience writing and reviewing version-controlled code (Git or equivalent) and following standards for documentation, testing/validation, and maintainability.
- Demonstrated ability to establish standards and influence best practices across an analytics team (for example code reviews, modeling conventions, metric governance), without requiring formal people management.
- Self-starter mindset with the ability to take initiative, drive ambiguous problems to clear solutions, and partner effectively across technical and business stakeholders.
BONUS
- Familiarity with dbt concepts and best practices, or experience migrating legacy SQL pipelines into a governed modeling framework.
- Experience implementing data quality monitoring, alerting, and incident response patterns for analytics datasets.
- Python for analysis and automation.

Frame your portfolio around retail data problems
Chewy's data science work centers on customer personalization, demand forecasting, and inventory optimization. Projects demonstrating experience with large-scale e-commerce datasets or recommendation engines will align more directly with what their hiring teams are evaluating.
Document your degree field before applying
H-1B sponsorship for Data Science Engineer roles requires a specialty occupation showing your degree directly relates to the position. A background in computer science, statistics, or a quantitative field strengthens that connection. Gather your transcripts and have translated copies ready if your degree is from outside the U.S.
Ask about sponsorship scope during early recruiter calls
Chewy sponsors multiple visa types for this role. Ask specifically whether they support change of status for candidates already in the U.S. on OPT or CPT, and whether they file premium processing, so you can plan your start date around realistic USCIS processing windows.
Use Migrate Mate to surface open Data Science Engineer roles at Chewy
Chewy posts Data Science Engineer openings across multiple teams and locations at different times. Migrate Mate filters by visa sponsorship and role type, so you can track Chewy-specific openings rather than manually sorting through listings that don't confirm sponsorship.
Understand the PERM timeline if a Green Card is your goal
Chewy has sponsored EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for engineering roles, but PERM labor certification through DOL can take a year or more before an I-140 is even filed. Raise long-term immigration goals with your recruiter before your offer stage, not after you've started.

Find Data Science Engineer at Chewy JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Chewy sponsor H-1B visas for Data Science Engineers?
Yes, Chewy sponsors H-1B visas for Data Science Engineer roles. They participate in the annual H-1B lottery, which opens in March for an October 1 start date. If you're already in the U.S. on a qualifying status like F-1 OPT, Chewy can file for a change of status rather than requiring you to attend a consular interview abroad.
Which visa types does Chewy commonly use for Data Science Engineer roles?
Chewy sponsors H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT for Data Science Engineer positions, and has an established track record filing EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa petitions for engineering roles. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals whose role qualifies under USMCA. The right visa type depends on your nationality, current status, and career stage.
What qualifications are expected for Data Science Engineer roles at Chewy?
Chewy typically looks for a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, statistics, applied mathematics, or a related quantitative field. Practical experience with machine learning pipelines, large-scale data processing tools like Spark or Python, and familiarity with retail or e-commerce analytics are common expectations. Roles closer to engineering require stronger software development skills alongside modeling experience.
How do I apply for Data Science Engineer jobs at Chewy?
You can browse and apply for Data Science Engineer roles at Chewy through Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for visa-sponsored positions so you're not wasting time on listings that don't confirm sponsorship. Chewy's Data Science teams post openings across several areas including personalization, supply chain, and customer analytics, so checking regularly improves your chances of finding a well-matched opening.
How do I plan my timeline for H-1B sponsorship at Chewy?
The H-1B cap lottery registration window opens in March, with selection results typically announced by late March or April. Petition filing follows in April, and approved employees can start on October 1 at the earliest. If you're finishing OPT before October, confirm Chewy files before your OPT end date so your cap-gap extension through USCIS keeps you work-authorized during the gap.
