Job Roles at City of Philadelphia Companies
How to Get Visa Sponsorship in City of Philadelphia Visa Sponsorship USA
Target roles in high-demand city departments
Philadelphia's public sector sponsors visas most often for specialized technical and administrative roles. Focus your search on departments like public health, information technology, planning, and finance, where specialty occupation requirements are clearest and sponsorship is most likely.
Understand how government hiring timelines work
City government hiring moves slower than the private sector. Applications, civil service reviews, and sponsorship approvals can take several months. Build this into your job search timeline and apply well before your current work authorization expires.
Check whether the role requires a civil service exam
Many City of Philadelphia positions require passing a civil service examination before an offer is extended. Confirm exam requirements early, some roles are exempt, but others aren't, and skipping this step can delay or disqualify your application.
Prioritize roles that clearly state a degree requirement
H-1B sponsorship requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation. Look for Philadelphia job postings that specify a bachelor's degree in a particular field, this is the clearest signal the role can support H-1B sponsorship.
Search verified sponsors before applying broadly
Not every government employer sponsors visas at the same rate. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, helping you focus your energy on employers like Philadelphia with a confirmed track record.
Ask about sponsorship during the interview, not after
City of Philadelphia has sponsored both H-1B and Green Card cases, so raising the topic isn't unusual. Clarify sponsorship willingness before accepting any offer, government HR departments often need lead time to coordinate with legal counsel.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does City of Philadelphia sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, the City of Philadelphia sponsors H-1B visas, primarily for roles in specialized fields such as information technology, public health, engineering, and finance. The sponsorship process in a government setting involves coordination between city HR and legal teams, so applicants should confirm sponsorship willingness early in the hiring process and account for longer administrative timelines compared to private sector employers.
What visa types does City of Philadelphia sponsor?
The City of Philadelphia has a history of sponsoring H-1B visas for specialty occupation roles and employment-based Green Cards, including EB-2 and EB-3 categories, for longer-term hires. It has also sponsored TN visas for eligible Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying professional roles. The mix of visa types reflects the city's need for specialized talent across a range of public sector departments.
Which departments or roles at City of Philadelphia are most likely to offer visa sponsorship?
Sponsorship tends to be concentrated in departments where specialized skills are essential and harder to fill locally, typically information technology, public health, urban planning, and fiscal administration. Roles requiring a specific bachelor's degree or higher in a technical field are the strongest candidates for H-1B sponsorship. Positions classified under civil service may have additional requirements before sponsorship can be initiated.
How do I find open jobs at City of Philadelphia that offer visa sponsorship?
The City of Philadelphia posts openings through its official jobs portal, but listings rarely specify visa sponsorship explicitly. Migrate Mate tracks employers with verified sponsorship histories, making it easier to identify City of Philadelphia roles worth targeting without having to guess whether sponsorship is on the table. Filter by employer and visa type to narrow your search to relevant opportunities.
How do I approach the sponsorship conversation when applying to City of Philadelphia?
Government employers like the City of Philadelphia typically have structured HR processes, so it's best to raise the sponsorship question before or during the interview stage, not after an offer is made. Ask whether the department has sponsored visas for similar roles in the past and who coordinates the legal process internally. Being direct signals that you understand the process and helps HR assess feasibility early.
