Align your NP licensure before applying
North Carolina requires a separate NP license distinct from your RN license. Confirming your NCBON authorization to practice is complete before you apply removes a common bottleneck that delays Duke's ability to extend a sponsored offer.
Target Duke's academic medical specialties directly
Duke sponsors across specialties, but openings in oncology, cardiology, and transplant medicine tend to be posted through Duke Health's careers portal separately from the university's main HR system. Check both sources so you don't miss active roles.
Distinguish your E-3 and H-1B eligibility early
Duke sponsors both visa types for NPs. If you're an Australian citizen, the E-3 avoids the H-1B lottery entirely and can be filed year-round. Clarify which category applies to you before your first recruiter conversation so the hiring team routes your file correctly.
Request LCA filing details during the offer stage
Duke's legal team files the Labor Condition Application with DOL before petitioning USCIS. Ask your recruiter for the expected LCA submission date so you can track the certified wage determination and confirm it aligns with the posted role's compensation range.
Use Migrate Mate to identify open NP roles at Duke
Filtering for NP positions at Duke with visa sponsorship across a general job board is time-consuming. Migrate Mate surfaces sponsored NP openings directly so you can focus applications on roles where Duke has already indicated sponsorship willingness.
Prepare your credentials for USCIS specialty occupation review
USCIS scrutinizes whether NP roles meet specialty occupation standards. Gather your graduate nursing transcripts, national certification documents from ANCC or AANPCP, and any clinical training records before Duke's legal team begins drafting the H-1B petition.

Find NP at Duke University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Duke University sponsor H-1B visas for NPs?
Yes, Duke University sponsors H-1B visas for NP roles through its established immigration program. Because NP positions require a graduate-level nursing degree and national certification, they generally satisfy USCIS specialty occupation requirements. Duke's legal team handles the Labor Condition Application and I-129 petition, but you should confirm sponsorship availability with the specific hiring department during the interview process.
How do I apply for NP jobs at Duke University?
Applications go through Duke Health's careers portal for clinical NP roles and through Duke University's main HR site for positions tied to academic or research functions. Search by job family or department. You can also browse NP openings at Duke that include visa sponsorship through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by sponsorship eligibility so you're not sorting through positions that won't support your visa.
Which visa types does Duke University commonly use for NP roles?
Duke sponsors H-1B and E-3 visas for NPs, along with EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa categories for candidates pursuing permanent residence. Australian citizens are often routed toward the E-3 because it bypasses the H-1B annual lottery and can be approved at a U.S. consulate without waiting for an October 1 start date. The right category depends on your citizenship and immigration goals.
What qualifications does Duke University expect for NP candidates requiring sponsorship?
Duke expects a Master of Science in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice, national certification through ANCC or AANPCP in the relevant specialty, and an active or pending North Carolina NP license. For sponsored candidates, your degree and certification also need to satisfy USCIS specialty occupation standards, meaning the role must require the specific graduate-level credential you hold, not just any bachelor's degree.
How do I handle timing if my OPT or current status expires before Duke's onboarding process completes?
If you're on F-1 OPT, the standard cap-gap rule extends your work authorization through September 30 if you have an approved H-1B petition with an October 1 start date. For E-3 candidates, Duke can file for consular processing abroad or a change of status domestically, but the LCA certification from DOL typically adds two to four weeks before USCIS can receive the petition. Discuss your expiration date with Duke's HR team as early as the offer stage.
