INTRODUCTION
Our mission at Duolingo is to develop the best education in the world and make it universally available. It's a big mission, and that's where you come in!
At Duolingo, you'll join a team that cares about educating our users, experimenting with big ideas, making fact-based decisions, and finding innovative solutions to complex problems. You'll have limitless learning opportunities and daily collaborations with world-class minds — while doing work that's both meaningful and fun.
Join our life-changing mission to develop education for our half a billion (and growing!) learners around the world.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We're looking for a Director, Communications to lead how Duolingo shows up at our most important moments—when we launch products, share results, and explain how we're growing. This role is responsible for turning what we're building and how it's performing into clear, compelling stories.
You'll own the narratives around our biggest product bets and ensure they show up consistently across launches, earnings, and executive communications. You'll work closely with Product, Data, and Finance to translate progress into proof—connecting what we ship to real outcomes for learners and the business.
This is a role for someone who thinks like an operator, not just a storyteller: you understand how product decisions drive growth, and how to turn that into narratives that build trust, drive adoption, and stand up to scrutiny.
YOU WILL...
- Own how we communicate product progress and company performance—connecting what we ship to how we grow (DAUs, engagement, revenue).
- Lead comms for earnings and major company moments: shape the narrative, partner with IR and Finance, and ensure consistency across press, exec messaging, and owned channels.
- Drive product communications end-to-end: from shaping the story to landing the launch to sustaining momentum after.
- Turn complex product areas (AI, efficacy, monetization) into simple, credible narratives with clear proof points.
- Partner deeply with Product and Data to identify what's actually interesting, differentiated, and worth talking about—and what's not.
- Build repeatable systems for how we show up across launches and earnings (messaging frameworks, proof points, story arcs).
- Prepare executives to speak clearly and consistently about product and business performance in high-stakes moments.
- Anticipate and manage issues tied to product changes, AI, efficacy, and monetization—balancing transparency with clarity.
- Define what "good" looks like and measure it—focusing on message pull-through, narrative clarity, and impact on trust and growth.
- Manage agencies and partners to execute at a high bar.
✅ YOU HAVE...
- 10+ years in communications, with strong experience in product comms and/or corporate/financial comms at a high-growth tech company.
- A track record of turning product work into clear, differentiated stories that get picked up—and understood.
- Experience supporting earnings or working closely with Finance/IR to shape external narratives.
- Strong instincts for what matters: you can quickly identify the signal in a roadmap, dataset, or result—and build a story around it.
- Excellent writing and editing skills; you can make complex ideas simple without losing credibility.
- Experience preparing executives for high-stakes moments (earnings, launches, major interviews).
- Comfort working cross-functionally with Product, Data, Marketing, and Finance.
- Ability to operate in a fast-moving environment and build structure where it doesn't exist.
- Experience managing agencies and holding a high-quality bar.
EXCEPTIONAL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE...
- Experience in a product-led, experimentation-heavy company.
- Strong intuition for product storytelling, especially around AI or technical systems.
- Direct experience leading or owning earnings communications.
- Experience connecting product metrics to business narratives in a credible way.
- Background in education, edtech, or consumer subscription products.
- Strong relationships with business, tech, and financial media.

Target roles in engineering and AI
Duolingo's strongest sponsorship activity is concentrated in software engineering, machine learning, and AI research. Focusing your application on these technical disciplines gives you the best chance of landing a role where sponsorship is routine and well-supported.
Prepare for a technical-first interview process
Duolingo's engineering interviews emphasize systems design and algorithmic problem-solving. Sponsorship decisions follow the hire, so clearing the technical bar is the first and most important step for international candidates in software roles.
Search for verified sponsorship before applying
Not every job listing makes sponsorship availability obvious. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, helping you confirm Duolingo is actively filing before investing time in your application.
Consider Duolingo's TN visa eligibility if you're Canadian or Mexican
Duolingo sponsors the TN visa for eligible Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying roles. If you hold citizenship in either country, this pathway avoids the H-1B lottery entirely and can result in a faster path to starting work.

Find Duolingo JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Duolingo sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Duolingo sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying roles, primarily in engineering, machine learning, and product. As a technology company competing for specialized talent globally, sponsoring the H-1B is a standard part of their hiring process. Roles requiring a specific technical degree in a specialty occupation are the most likely candidates for H-1B support.
Which visa types does Duolingo sponsor?
Duolingo sponsors a range of visa categories including H-1B, TN, J-1, and F-1 OPT and CPT for early-career and student hires. For longer-term employees, Duolingo also supports Green Card sponsorship through the EB-2 and EB-3 employment-based preference categories, making it a viable option for candidates looking beyond temporary work authorization.
Which departments or roles at Duolingo are most likely to receive visa sponsorship?
Sponsorship at Duolingo is most common in software engineering, AI and machine learning, data science, and research roles. These positions typically require specialized degrees in computer science, engineering, or related fields, which aligns directly with the specialty occupation standard for H-1B and the educational requirements for Green Card categories like EB-2.
How do I find visa-sponsored jobs at Duolingo?
The most reliable approach is to search on Migrate Mate, which aggregates open roles from companies with verified sponsorship histories and lets you filter specifically by visa type and employer. This saves time compared to sifting through general job listings where sponsorship eligibility is unclear. Once you identify a relevant Duolingo role, apply directly through their careers portal.
How do I know if Duolingo will sponsor me for a Green Card?
Duolingo has a demonstrated history of sponsoring Green Cards for employees in technical roles. Green Card sponsorship is typically discussed after an initial period of employment, not during the offer stage. The best approach is to ask directly during final-round interviews or after receiving an offer, and to clarify which EB category the company typically files under for your role type.
