Environmental Science Associates (ESA) is a 100% employee-owned environmental consulting firm. We plan, design, permit, mitigate, and restore for projects across our communities, infrastructure systems, open spaces, and wildlands. We are 50 years strong in 21 offices across California, the Pacific Northwest, and the Southeastern United States.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ESA seeks a highly motivated Coastal Engineer with 5+ years of experience in physical coastal processes to join our Environmental Hydrology & Design Team in our San Francisco, CA office. The ideal candidate shall serve as a technical specialist, performing quantitative analysis, modeling, and engineering in support of multi-objective planning and design projects, including shore and wetland restoration design, natural resource management, flooding and erosion studies, and sea-level rise adaptation planning.
Who You Are
You are a Coastal Engineer with a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in physical coastal processes such as wave theory and modeling, coastal flood hazard analysis, and sediment transport analysis and modeling. You have a degree in Coastal Engineering or a closely related field and a California Professional Engineers license or the ability to obtain one. A master’s or PhD is desirable but not required. You possess basic knowledge of California coastal regulations, policies, processes and principles. You are an effective team player and have experience delegating work to and providing supervisory support for entry-level staff. You have strong writing skills and can distill complex engineering and scientific concepts in an understandable way for the public, clients, agency staff, teaming partners and other project stakeholders. You are effective at communicating complex coastal analyses in oral presentations to peer groups and technical advisory groups. You thrive in a fast-paced consulting environment and can manage multiple responsibilities and deadlines while working on a team or independently.
What You Will Do For ESA
You will work in collaboration with our team of hydrologists, geomorphologists, biologists, engineers and regulatory experts to help manage, restore and enhance natural shores and wetlands throughout Northern California and beyond. You may serve as a Task Manager on basic or moderately complex projects, developing and tracking scopes of work, schedules, budgets and invoices under a Project Manager’s direction. You will write clear and concise engineering and scientific reports and papers, communicate concepts in presentations to the public and to technical reviewers and provide mentorship for more junior staff including delegating work, reviewing work for accuracy and providing constructive feedback while working on projects together.
What’s Special About Our Team
ESA's Environmental Hydrology & Design team includes engineers, hydrologists, geomorphologists, and landscape architects. Much of our work is oriented toward the restoration of habitat and ecosystem function, often as part of multi-benefit projects. At ESA, we provide benefits such as medical, dental, and vision insurance (paid at 70% for you AND your family), annual allocations of company share through our ESOP, a 401(k) plan with company match, and paid vacation, sick leave, and holidays, to name a few. We also provide specific programs whether you want to further your technical expertise, sharpen your business acumen, or help lead the next generation of employee-owners. We want to support you in reaching your career goals through tuition reimbursement, professional development bonuses, and attendance at conferences.

Job Roles at Environmental Science Associates Companies
How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Environmental Science Associates Visa Sponsorship USA
Target technical and scientific roles first
ESA's sponsorship activity is concentrated in specialty occupations tied to environmental science, engineering, and consulting. Focus your applications on roles requiring a directly relevant degree, as these align most closely with the visa types ESA has historically supported.
Understand how consulting firms approach sponsorship
Consulting employers like ESA typically sponsor candidates for project-critical positions rather than broadly across all departments. Position yourself as filling a specialized technical gap, not a generalist role, to make the strongest case for sponsorship consideration.
Align your degree field tightly with the job description
H-1B eligibility at a consulting firm like ESA hinges on specialty occupation status. Ensure your degree field directly maps to the role title, since environmental consulting positions often require specific disciplinary backgrounds to qualify.
Research ESA's project portfolio before applying
ESA works across infrastructure, natural resources, and regulatory compliance. Referencing specific practice areas relevant to your expertise signals genuine fit and increases your chances of landing a role that justifies sponsorship investment from the firm.
Browse verified sponsoring employers before you apply
Confirming a company's real sponsorship history before investing time in an application matters. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by visa type and industry, helping you prioritize ESA and firms with comparable sponsorship track records.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Environmental Science Associates sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, Environmental Science Associates sponsors H-1B visas. ESA has filed H-1B petitions for international professionals in specialty occupations, primarily in technical and scientific roles tied to its environmental consulting work. Sponsorship is selective rather than high-volume, so candidates who demonstrate a direct alignment between their degree, experience, and the specific role are in the strongest position.
Which visa types does Environmental Science Associates sponsor?
ESA sponsors H-1B visas along with F-1 OPT and F-1 CPT for students in qualifying programs. TN visas are also supported, making ESA an option for eligible Canadian and Mexican professionals. Green Card sponsorship has not been a consistent part of ESA's recent filing history, so candidates should factor long-term immigration planning into their conversations with the firm.
Which roles or departments at Environmental Science Associates are most likely to receive visa sponsorship?
Sponsorship at ESA is most common in technical disciplines such as environmental science, ecology, engineering, planning, and regulatory compliance. These roles typically require a degree directly aligned with the job function, satisfying H-1B specialty occupation requirements. Corporate and administrative positions are less likely to be sponsored, as they tend to carry broader degree requirements that complicate visa eligibility.
How do I approach the application process at Environmental Science Associates as an international candidate?
Apply to roles where your degree field directly matches the position description, and address your visa status proactively in your cover letter or recruiter conversation. ESA works on project-based timelines, so demonstrating availability and a relevant technical background matters. If you're currently on OPT or CPT, highlight that you can start without immediate H-1B filing. Migrate Mate can help you identify open ESA roles that are actively open to sponsored candidates.
How do I know if Environmental Science Associates is actively hiring international candidates right now?
ESA's sponsorship activity reflects its current hiring needs across ongoing projects, which can shift with contract cycles and practice area demand. Checking current openings through Migrate Mate gives you a filtered view of roles at verified sponsoring employers like ESA, so you're not guessing about whether a listing is realistically open to international applicants.
