As a Principal (Forward Deployed AI Engineer) you’ll be part of our rapidly growing engineering team and help to build the next generation of AI solutions. You’ll have the chance to partner with clients in a variety of BCG regions and industries, and on key topics like climate change, enabling them to design, build, and deploy new and innovative solutions. Additional responsibilities will include developing and delivering thought leadership in scientific communities and papers as well as leading conferences on behalf of BCG X.
As a core member of BCG X you will also take a larger and more proactive role in shaping the strategy of BCG X – and of BCG overall. You will work closely with partners & managing directors to drive our company’s growth & business development. Additional responsibilities will include developing and delivering thought leadership, managing teams of AI scientists, engineers, designers. Successful candidates are intellectually curious builders who are biased toward action, scrappy, and communicative.
We are looking for builder-type developers with a strong foundation in AI/ML, including GenAI (LLMs, LangChain), and experience in either data engineering or modern full-stack development. The ideal candidate is a passionate software engineer eager to apply advanced technologies to help organizations become AI-led and innovation-driven. Successful candidates possess the following:
- Comfortable in a client-facing role, manage engagements, client relationships, provide “thought leadership” to teams
- Apply software development practices and standards to develop robust and maintainable software
- Experienced in guiding non-technical teams and consultants in and best practices for robust software development
- Optimize and enhance computational efficiency of algorithms and software design
- Motivated by a fast-paced, service-oriented environment and interacting directly with clients on new features for future product releases
- A natural problem-solver and intellectually curious across a breadth of industries and topics
- Have strong project management skills and can act as interface between business & tech for our clients
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor's, master's, or PhD in engineering or related field with 8+ years of relevant experience
- Proven experience architecting and deploying AI/GenAI solutions, including Agentic AI systems, at enterprise scale
- Experience working with Large Language Models (LLMs), including platforms such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or open-source models
- Proficient in Python and skilled in full-stack development using React, JavaScript, TypeScript, with experience in CI/CD pipelines
- Familiarity with the storage, manipulation, and management of relational, non-relational and streaming data structures
- Experience building and deploying production systems on major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) is a plus
- Strong record of professional accomplishment and leadership, demonstrated ability to lead and manage projects and teams
- Proven ability to drive topics and make a commercial impact
- Strong communicator with the ability to guide non-technical stakeholders and contribute in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment

You must live within a reasonable commuting distance of your home office. As a member of that office, it is expected you will be in the office as directed. This role puts you on an accelerated path of personal and professional growth and development and so, at times, requires extended working hours. Our work often requires travel to client sites.

The first year base compensation for this role is: $252,900 USD
