Translate retail leadership into U.S. credentials
Gap's GM roles require demonstrated P&L ownership, team scaling, and inventory management. Frame your international experience in those exact terms on your resume. Vague titles won't survive an H-1B specialty occupation review, so specificity in scope and reporting structure matters.
Target Gap's multi-unit pipeline roles first
Gap often promotes District Manager candidates from strong General Manager performers. Applying to locations in high-turnover markets increases your odds of a faster offer cycle, which gives your employer more runway to file an LCA with DOL before your current status expires.
Clarify sponsorship scope during the offer stage
Gap sponsors multiple visa categories for General Managers, including H-1B, E-3, and TN. When you receive an offer, ask HR directly which pathway they intend to file and whether they use premium processing, since a standard H-1B timeline can run four to six months.
Align your start date with USCIS cap timelines
If you're cap-subject, H-1B registration opens in March for an October 1 start. Build this into salary negotiations and onboarding discussions with Gap's HR team so your store leadership handover doesn't conflict with a multi-month USCIS adjudication window.
Use Migrate Mate to filter verified General Manager openings
Gap posts General Manager roles across outlet, flagship, and Old Navy banner locations unevenly. Use Migrate Mate to surface only the Gap GM postings tied to active sponsorship history so you're not applying to locations that route hires through a different staffing structure.
Prepare your PERM documentation early for immigrant pathways
Gap has filed EB-2 and EB-3 petitions for management roles. If your goal is a Green Card, ask during negotiations whether they'll initiate PERM concurrently with your nonimmigrant visa. PERM labor market testing runs three to six months before USCIS even receives the I-140.

Find General Manager at Gap JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Gap sponsor H-1B visas for General Managers?
Yes, Gap sponsors H-1B visas for General Manager roles. The General Manager position typically qualifies as a specialty occupation given the complexity of retail operations management, but your offer letter and job description need to clearly establish degree requirements. Gap's HR and legal teams handle the LCA filing with DOL before USCIS submission.
How do I apply for General Manager jobs at Gap?
Apply directly through Gap Inc.'s careers portal or use Migrate Mate to filter General Manager openings at Gap that are tied to visa sponsorship activity. Tailor your application to highlight P&L management, team size, and inventory metrics. Gap's retail hiring process typically includes a phone screen, panel interview with district or regional leadership, and a store walk.
Which visa types does Gap commonly use for General Manager roles?
Gap sponsors H-1B, H-1B1, E-3, and TN visas for General Manager positions, as well as F-1 OPT and CPT for eligible candidates. For longer-term pathways, Gap has also pursued EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for management roles. The visa type filed depends on your nationality, degree background, and the specific position structure.
What qualifications does Gap expect for General Manager candidates requiring sponsorship?
Gap typically requires a bachelor's degree in business, retail management, or a related field for General Manager roles, which is also what anchors the H-1B specialty occupation classification. Beyond the degree, expect Gap to prioritize candidates with multi-year experience managing store-level teams, meeting sales targets, and handling operational responsibilities like scheduling, shrink management, and vendor coordination.
How do I plan my timeline if I need Gap to sponsor my visa as a General Manager?
Timeline depends heavily on your visa type. E-3 and TN petitions can move quickly, often within four to eight weeks. H-1B filings are cap-subject with an October 1 start date, so your offer needs to come through before the March registration window. If you're on OPT, confirm your expiration date and request premium processing from Gap's immigration counsel to avoid a gap in work authorization.
