Align your credentials to U.S. equivalency standards
George Mason evaluates foreign academic credentials carefully for teaching hires. Get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency before applying so your degree level is unambiguous to their HR and sponsoring office from the start.
Target departments with recurring instructional vacancies
Engineering, computer science, and health sciences departments at Mason post teaching roles more consistently than others. Focusing your applications there improves your odds of landing a role that comes with long-term sponsorship intent, not just a one-semester contract.
Clarify visa pathway before accepting any offer
Mason sponsors both H-1B and permanent residence pathways for qualifying teaching roles. Ask HR during the offer stage which visa category applies to your position, since tenure-track faculty often qualify for EB-2 or EB-3 PERM filings while adjunct roles typically do not.
Time your application around Mason's hiring calendar
Most tenure-track teaching searches at George Mason open in the fall for positions starting the following academic year. Applying early in that window gives you enough lead time for the H-1B petition or J-1 waiver process before your intended start date.
Document your teaching experience for specialty occupation evidence
USCIS requires teaching roles to meet the specialty occupation standard. Compile syllabi, course descriptions, and official transcripts showing your degree directly corresponds to the subject area you will teach, since Mason's international office will need this for the I-129 petition.

Find Teaching at George Mason University JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does George Mason University sponsor H-1B visas for Teaching roles?
Yes, George Mason University sponsors H-1B visas for qualifying Teaching positions, particularly for tenure-track and full-time instructional faculty roles where a specific degree in the field is required. Adjunct or part-time teaching roles are less likely to qualify, since USCIS requires the position to meet the specialty occupation standard under the H-1B category.
How do I apply for Teaching jobs at George Mason University?
Applications for Teaching roles at George Mason are submitted through the university's official careers portal. Each posting specifies the department, rank, and required qualifications. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse Mason's current Teaching openings filtered by visa sponsorship type, which helps you identify positions where international candidates are explicitly considered before investing time in the full application.
Which visa types does George Mason University use for Teaching hires?
George Mason sponsors H-1B visas for specialty occupation teaching roles and supports F-1 OPT and CPT for students or recent graduates in eligible programs. For longer-term faculty positions, the university may also initiate PERM-based Green Card sponsorship under EB-2 or EB-3. TN status is available for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying teaching disciplines under USMCA.
What qualifications does George Mason University expect for Teaching roles?
Most full-time Teaching positions require a terminal degree in the relevant discipline, typically a Ph.D. or equivalent for tenure-track faculty. Instructional or lecturer roles may accept a master's degree with substantial professional or teaching experience. Departmental needs vary widely, so matching your degree field directly to the subject area you would teach is the clearest path to both an offer and a successful H-1B petition.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Teaching role at George Mason?
Once you have a signed offer, George Mason's international services office typically needs several weeks to prepare and file the H-1B petition with USCIS. Standard USCIS processing can take three to six months, and premium processing is available to shorten that to around 15 business days. For PERM-based Green Card filings, expect a multi-year process that begins after you are already employed in the role.
