Align your degree to petroleum engineering roles
ExxonMobil's H-1B filings concentrate heavily in reservoir engineering, drilling, and process engineering. Pull the relevant O*NET occupation profile for your target role and confirm your degree field maps directly to the specialty occupation definition before applying.
Document foreign credentials before interviewing
If your engineering or geoscience degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-recognized evaluator before your interview. ExxonMobil's immigration teams work faster when equivalency is already established and in writing.
Target ExxonMobil's research and technology division
ExxonMobil's research and engineering centers in Houston and Clinton, New Jersey tend to generate the most H-1B filings. Roles in computational modeling, materials science, and carbon capture research sit squarely in the specialty occupation sweet spot under USCIS guidelines.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Use the OFLC Wage Search to find the wage level ExxonMobil's certified Labor Condition Application will be pegged to. If the offer falls at Level I, that signals entry-level classification and can affect your petition's credibility with USCIS during adjudication.
Search Migrate Mate for ExxonMobil's LCA filing history
Before applying, use Migrate Mate to review ExxonMobil's DOL Labor Condition Application filings by job title and work location. That data shows which roles the company has actively sponsored and what wage levels it has certified, so you can target your application precisely.
Request premium processing if your start date is fixed
ExxonMobil typically sets structured onboarding cycles tied to project staffing. If your H-1B approval timeline is cutting close to a start date, ask your recruiter whether the company will file for USCIS premium processing, which adjudicates the petition within 15 business days.
ExxonMobil H-1B Visa Sponsorship: Frequently Asked Questions
Does ExxonMobil sponsor H-1B visas?
Yes, ExxonMobil sponsors H-1B visas for qualified candidates in technical and engineering roles. The company has an established immigration program that handles Labor Condition Application filings with DOL and I-129 petition submissions to USCIS. Sponsorship is typically offered to candidates in roles that meet the specialty occupation definition, meaning a position requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field.
Which roles at ExxonMobil are most likely to receive H-1B sponsorship?
H-1B sponsorship at ExxonMobil concentrates in petroleum engineering, reservoir simulation, process engineering, data science, and computational research. Roles within the company's research and engineering centers are strong candidates because they require highly specific technical degrees. Corporate functions like finance and supply chain analytics can also qualify if the position demands a degree in a specific discipline.
How do I confirm ExxonMobil has filed H-1B petitions for my target role?
You can review ExxonMobil's historical Labor Condition Application filings through Migrate Mate, which surfaces DOL LCA data by employer, job title, and work location. This lets you confirm that the company has actively certified positions matching your occupation before you invest time in the application process.
How do I navigate the H-1B process once ExxonMobil extends an offer?
After an offer, ExxonMobil's immigration team or outside counsel files a Labor Condition Application with DOL, which certifies the prevailing wage. Once certified, the company submits an I-129 petition to USCIS. If you're subject to the H-1B cap, registration happens in March for an October start date. Cap-exempt transfers from an existing H-1B can be filed anytime.
How long does the H-1B sponsorship process take at ExxonMobil?
From offer acceptance to an approved H-1B petition, the process typically spans several months when accounting for LCA certification, USCIS adjudication, and any requests for evidence. Standard USCIS processing runs three to six months. ExxonMobil may authorize premium processing for time-sensitive hires, which reduces USCIS adjudication to 15 business days. Cap-subject applicants must also factor in the annual March registration window.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B jobs at ExxonMobil?
H-1B employers must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is determined when they file the Labor Condition Application with the Department of Labor. The rate is based on the role, location, and experience level, and ensures international hires are paid comparably to U.S. workers in the same position. You can look up prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the DOL's OFLC Wage Search tool.
