Metal Additive Manufacturing Designer/Modeler
This role is fully onsite in Bloomfield, CT, five days per week, and the company will be relocating to Suffield, CT later in 2026.
About LiquidPiston:
LiquidPiston, Inc. is reinventing the internal combustion engine. Our patented thermodynamic cycle and compact rotary engine architecture are designed to deliver significantly higher efficiency and power density than traditional engines. We’re applying cutting-edge engineering—including additive manufacturing and advanced optimization tools—to shape the future of propulsion and portable power.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a talented Engineer with a strong background in Additive Manufacturing and Topology Optimization to join our R&D team. In this role, you’ll be responsible for transforming next-generation rotary engine designs through advanced computational design methods and manufacturing technologies. You’ll work at the intersection of simulation, design, and manufacturing to push performance and efficiency beyond traditional boundaries. This is a hands-on, high-impact position with opportunities to invent, iterate, and deliver real-world solutions in a fast-paced development environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Apply topology optimization and additive manufacturing (AM) methods to design lightweight, high-performance engine components
- Use nTop (preferred) or similar software to optimize structural, thermal, and fluid-related features
- Develop and refine solid models and assemblies tailored for AM processes
- Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, and manufacturing engineers to integrate optimized parts into complete engine systems
- Analyze designs using simulations (FEA, CFD, thermal) and correlate with physical test data
- Oversee additive builds from design validation through manufacturing and post-processing
- Innovate new design approaches to improve performance, reduce weight, and streamline manufacturing
- Support engine testing and contribute insights based on material behavior and part performance
- Maintain clear documentation, share findings in presentations, and contribute to design reviews
- Uphold a proactive, problem-solving mindset with a collaborative and resilient approach to technical challenges
Required Qualifications:
- BS or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 3+ years of professional experience in product design, simulation, and/or manufacturing
- Expertise in additive manufacturing methods (e.g., DMLS, SLS, Binder Jetting, etc.)
- Proficiency in topology optimization tools (nTop preferred) for structural, thermal, and fluid systems
- Strong 3D CAD skills (SolidWorks or equivalent)
- Simulation experience with ANSYS or similar FEA/thermal software
- Deep understanding of materials science, especially metallurgy as it pertains to AM
- Proven ability to work independently and solve complex, cross-disciplinary problems
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with internal combustion engines, compressors, or advanced thermodynamic systems
- Knowledge of GT-Suite, MATLAB, Python, or other engineering simulation/scripting tools
- Experience in a prototype or R&D environment
- Strong written communication skills, including proposal and technical report writing
- Familiarity with quality control and inspection processes for additive parts
Benefits:
- Flexible PTO to encourage work-life balance and personal well-being
- Comprehensive healthcare coverage: medical, dental, and vision plans
- Equity participation: RSUs for all permanent employees
- 401(k) with match: 100% up to 3%, plus 50% match for 3–5% range
- Growth opportunities: Mentorship, training, and leadership development

Target roles in engine design and applied research
LiquidPiston's sponsorship activity centers on technical and research-focused positions. Engineers and scientists in thermodynamics, mechanical design, or propulsion systems are most likely to be considered for permanent residency visa sponsorship.
Understand the EB-2 and EB-3 pathways before applying
LiquidPiston sponsors Green Cards through employment-based categories. Knowing the difference between EB-2 and EB-3 requirements, including education and experience thresholds, helps you assess which pathway aligns with your qualifications before your first interview.
Expect a long-term sponsorship conversation, not a quick one
Green Card sponsorship unfolds over years, not months. At a company like LiquidPiston, it's worth raising your immigration needs during offer negotiations rather than after you've started, so both sides can plan accordingly.
Highlight advanced degrees and specialized research experience
EB-2 eligibility often hinges on a qualifying advanced degree or exceptional ability. LiquidPiston's work in advanced engine technology means candidates with relevant postgraduate research or publications are well-positioned to make a strong case.
Filter for verified sponsors before you apply
Not every science and research employer sponsors visas consistently. Migrate Mate surfaces verified sponsors so you can filter by real sponsorship history, saving you from chasing opportunities at companies that don't support immigration.
Ask about PERM labor certification early in the process
EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards typically require PERM labor certification, a Department of Labor process that takes considerable time. Asking LiquidPiston's HR team about their experience with PERM early signals seriousness and helps set realistic timelines.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does LiquidPiston sponsor H-1B visas?
Based on available sponsorship data, LiquidPiston does not have a significant H-1B visa filing history. The company's immigration support has focused on permanent residency pathways rather than nonimmigrant work visas. If H-1B sponsorship is a requirement for your situation, it's worth confirming directly with LiquidPiston's hiring team during the recruitment process.
What visa types does LiquidPiston sponsor?
LiquidPiston sponsors employment-based Green Cards, specifically through the EB-2 and EB-3 preference categories. These are permanent residency pathways, not temporary work visas. EB-2 typically requires an advanced degree or demonstrated exceptional ability, while EB-3 covers professionals with a bachelor's degree or skilled workers with relevant experience.
Which roles or departments at LiquidPiston are most likely to receive visa sponsorship?
Given LiquidPiston's focus on advanced rotary engine technology for defense and aerospace applications, sponsorship activity is most likely concentrated in engineering and applied research roles. Positions in mechanical engineering, thermodynamics, manufacturing, and systems design align closely with the company's core work and its demonstrated interest in sponsoring highly skilled candidates.
How do I find open roles at LiquidPiston that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most efficient way to identify current openings at LiquidPiston with confirmed sponsorship history. Rather than sifting through job listings that don't disclose immigration support, you can search by company and filter for verified Green Card or work visa sponsors, giving you a clearer picture of where sponsorship is actually available.
How do I approach the Green Card sponsorship conversation with LiquidPiston?
Raise immigration sponsorship during the offer stage, not after you've accepted. Be specific about which visa category you're targeting, EB-2 or EB-3, and what your current work authorization status is. Companies in specialized research fields like LiquidPiston often have legal counsel experienced with employment-based immigration, so a direct, informed conversation is more productive than a vague inquiry.
