Get Your Food Handler Credentials Before Applying
Many states require a food handler permit or food safety certification before you can work in a restaurant. Completing ServSafe or your state's equivalent certification before you apply signals readiness and removes a common onboarding delay for sponsored hires.
Target Corporate-Owned Locations Over Franchises
Franchise owners operate independently and typically lack the HR infrastructure to process visa sponsorship. Corporate-owned McDonald's locations have dedicated people operations teams with experience filing work authorization paperwork, so focus your search there from the start.
Confirm E-Verify Enrollment Before Accepting Any Offer
McDonald's corporate locations participate in E-Verify, the federal employment eligibility system. Before signing an offer, confirm the specific location is enrolled. OPT and CPT authorization only works smoothly when the employer has an active E-Verify account on file.
Time Your OPT Application Around Seasonal Hiring Surges
McDonald's ramps up hiring around summer and the holiday season. File your OPT application with USCIS at least 90 days before your program end date so your Employment Authorization Document arrives before peak hiring closes and positions fill.
Ask HR Directly About Green Card Sponsorship Timelines
EB-3 sponsorship for Service Team Member roles requires a PERM labor certification filed with DOL, which can take a year or longer. At the offer stage, ask McDonald's HR whether EB-3 sponsorship is available at your location and what the typical internal timeline looks like.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Sponsoring McDonald's Locations
Not every McDonald's listing includes sponsorship details upfront. Search Service Team Member roles on Migrate Mate to filter specifically for McDonald's positions that have a documented sponsorship track record, saving you time before you invest in an application.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does McDonald's sponsor H-1B visas for Service Team Members?
H-1B visa sponsorship is uncommon for Service Team Member roles because the H-1B is reserved for specialty occupations requiring at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Front-counter, drive-through, and kitchen support positions generally don't meet that threshold. McDonald's corporate locations are more likely to support F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, TN visa, or Green Card pathways through EB-3 for this role.
Which visa types are commonly used for Service Team Member roles at McDonald's?
F-1 OPT and F-1 CPT are the most practical options for international students currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a U.S. program. TN status can work for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying occupations. For longer-term sponsorship, EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM is the pathway McDonald's corporate locations have used for service-level roles.
What qualifications or experience are expected for Service Team Member roles at McDonald's?
Service Team Member positions at McDonald's are entry-level and don't require prior restaurant experience. Strong customer communication skills, availability for shift work including evenings and weekends, and the ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen or service environment are the core expectations. Some states require a food handler permit, which you can obtain before your first day.
How do I apply for Service Team Member jobs at McDonald's?
Start by browsing open Service Team Member listings on Migrate Mate, where you can filter for McDonald's positions that have a sponsorship track record. Apply through the official McDonald's careers portal or in person at corporate-owned locations. Make clear in your application that you hold valid work authorization or will need sponsorship, so hiring managers at E-Verify-enrolled locations can route your file correctly from the start.
How do I know if a McDonald's location will actually process my visa paperwork?
Franchise-owned locations handle HR independently and rarely have the infrastructure to manage visa filings. Corporate-owned McDonald's locations are more likely to have people operations teams experienced with work authorization. Ask during the interview whether the location is E-Verify enrolled and whether HR has previously supported OPT or Green Card filings for team members in this role.
