INTRODUCTION
McDonald’s® company-owned and independent Owner-Operator restaurants are staffed by great people, and right now we’re looking for more of them. People interested in satisfying careers with competitive benefits. People interested in growing and advancing. People with lots to offer. People like you. If you’re interested (and we sure hope you are), let’s get together.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The General Manager is responsible for running a profitable restaurant and for making sure the restaurant meets McDonald’s critical customer standards of Quality, Service, and Cleanliness. These standards are high, so this is a big job! The General Manager works with his/her leader to set the restaurant’s goals and creates a plan to achieve the goals.
To meet restaurant goals, the General Manager doesn’t work alone. He or she leads a team of Department Managers that has specific responsibilities in the restaurant. This means helping the Department Managers to set their own goals, following up on their progress, and providing coaching and direction to improve their Departments. By improving the Departments, the restaurant improves!
The General Manager may also be responsible for hiring and developing Department and Shift Managers to make sure that the restaurant has the right team to lead into the future.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Must be Servsafe certified and attended McDonald’s training classes.
This job posting is for a position in a restaurant owned and operated by an independent franchisee, not McDonald’s Corporation or McDonald’s USA, LLC. This means the independent franchisee, and not McDonald’s Corporation or McDonald’s USA, LLC, is alone responsible for all employment related matters in the restaurant including, among other things, setting any requirements for this job and all decisions concerning hiring, firing, discipline, supervisions, staffing and scheduling. McDonald’s Corporation or McDonald’s USA, LLC will not receive a copy of any application you submit for this job posting and will have no control over whether you receive an interview and/or are ultimately hired, does not control and is not responsible for the employment policies and practices of independent franchisees, and does not employ independent franchisees’ employees. If you are hired for this job posting, the independent franchisee, and not McDonald’s Corporation or McDonald’s USA, LLC, will be your employer.
This job posting contains some general information about what it is like to work in a McDonald’s restaurant, but is not a complete job description. People who work in a McDonald’s restaurant perform a number of different tasks every day, and this posting does not list all of the essential functions of the job.
McDonald’s is a drug free environment as this is a safety sensitive position.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding General Manager Jobs at McDonald's Jobs
Target corporate-owned locations over franchises
Franchise operators make their own hiring and sponsorship decisions independently of McDonald's corporate. Visa sponsorship is far more consistent through corporate-owned restaurants, so filter your search to those locations before investing time in applications.
Document your P&L and team leadership results
McDonald's General Manager roles require demonstrated ownership of labor costs, food costs, and customer satisfaction scores. Quantify these outcomes on your resume before applying. Specialty occupation arguments for this role depend on tying your degree to operational management, not just shift supervision.
Understand the PERM timeline before accepting an offer
If your goal is a Green Card through EB-2 or EB-3, PERM labor certification typically takes 12 to 18 months before USCIS even sees your I-140. Raise this with your hiring manager early so McDonald's legal team can begin the recruitment documentation process without delay.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsoring General Manager openings
Not every McDonald's job posting signals sponsorship willingness. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for General Manager roles at McDonald's where visa sponsorship has been confirmed, so you're not applying blind to locations that won't file.
Align your degree field to the specialty occupation standard
USCIS scrutinizes General Manager petitions closely because the role can be seen as non-specialty. A degree in hospitality management, business administration, or food service operations strengthens the H-1B argument significantly compared to an unrelated field.
Clarify OPT and CPT authorization before your start date
If you're on F-1 OPT or CPT, confirm your work authorization dates cover the full onboarding period. McDonald's uses E-Verify for employment eligibility, so any gap between your authorization and your start date will flag immediately during Form I-9 verification.

Find General Manager at McDonald's JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does McDonald's sponsor H-1B visas for General Managers?
McDonald's does sponsor H-1B visas for General Manager roles, but primarily through its corporate-owned restaurants rather than franchise locations. The H-1B requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation, which means demonstrating that the role requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as hospitality management or business administration. Franchise operators make independent sponsorship decisions, so targeting corporate locations is the more reliable path.
How do I apply for General Manager jobs at McDonald's?
Applications go through McDonald's careers portal, but identifying which postings are genuinely open to sponsorship requires more filtering than the portal provides. Migrate Mate lets you browse General Manager openings at McDonald's specifically filtered for visa sponsorship, which saves you from applying to franchise-operated locations that handle sponsorship on their own terms. Tailor your application to highlight operational metrics, team size managed, and any multi-unit experience.
Which visa types are commonly used for General Manager roles at McDonald's?
McDonald's has sponsored H-1B visas for General Managers as well as employment-based Green Cards through the EB-2 and EB-3 categories. F-1 OPT and CPT are also used for candidates already in the U.S. on student visas, and TN status is an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying management occupations. The right visa type depends on your nationality, educational background, and long-term immigration goals.
What qualifications does McDonald's expect for a sponsored General Manager role?
McDonald's typically expects several years of progressive restaurant or food service management experience, including direct responsibility for labor scheduling, food cost controls, and customer satisfaction metrics. A degree in hospitality, business, or a related field strengthens both your application and any H-1B specialty occupation argument. Multi-unit or high-volume experience is viewed favorably, and familiarity with QSR operational systems is often assumed rather than trained.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a McDonald's General Manager position?
For H-1B sponsorship, USCIS standard processing runs three to five months after the April lottery. If you need to start sooner, premium processing reduces that to 15 business days. For a Green Card through EB-3 PERM, expect at least 12 to 18 months for labor certification before the I-140 stage. Starting these conversations with McDonald's HR during the offer negotiation phase, not after signing, keeps the timeline on track.
