Align your resume to Dollar General's GM criteria
Dollar General General Manager postings consistently emphasize P&L ownership, shrink management, and team development. Frame your previous retail leadership experience around those exact metrics before you apply, not generic management accomplishments.
Target stores in high-turnover markets first
Dollar General operates thousands of locations, and GM vacancies cluster in rural and suburban markets with tighter local labor pools. Applying to openings in those areas increases your odds of reaching a hiring manager motivated to sponsor.
Understand how TN status fits retail management
If you're Canadian or Mexican, TN classification under USMCA covers management roles. Confirm your job offer letter explicitly describes a management function with defined supervisory scope, since DOL and border officers assess TN eligibility against that description.
Track your OPT timeline against Dollar General's hiring cycle
Dollar General GM roles can take 60 to 90 days from application to start date. If you're on F-1 OPT with fewer than 120 days remaining, start your application early enough that an H-1B cap-subject petition can be filed before your status expires.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open GM roles by sponsorship
Finding Dollar General GM openings that are actively tied to sponsorship history is the real bottleneck. Use Migrate Mate to browse verified General Manager listings at Dollar General filtered by visa type, so you're applying where sponsorship is already established.

Find General Manager at Dollar General JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Dollar General sponsor H-1B visas for General Managers?
Yes, Dollar General has sponsored H-1B visas for General Manager roles. H-1B sponsorship for retail management typically requires demonstrating that the position qualifies as a specialty occupation, which means your employer needs to document the degree requirement tied to the role. Not every GM opening will go through this process, so confirming sponsorship availability with the recruiter early is essential.
How do I apply for General Manager jobs at Dollar General?
You can apply through Dollar General's careers portal or through Migrate Mate, which surfaces Dollar General GM openings with visa sponsorship history attached. Dollar General's GM hiring process typically includes a recruiter phone screen, one or more interviews with district leadership, and a background check. Having your work authorization situation clearly documented before the recruiter screen will avoid delays later in the process.
Which visa types are commonly used for General Manager roles at Dollar General?
Dollar General has sponsored General Managers under H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, and F-1 CPT, as well as employment-based Green Card categories including EB-2 and EB-3. TN is particularly efficient for Canadian and Mexican nationals in management roles. H-1B remains the most common path for others, though it is subject to the annual cap and lottery. EB-2 and EB-3 sponsorship typically comes after you've established tenure with the company.
What qualifications does Dollar General expect for a sponsored General Manager?
Dollar General General Manager roles typically require prior retail store management experience, demonstrated ability to hit sales and shrink targets, and comfort managing hourly teams of varying sizes. For visa sponsorship purposes, particularly H-1B, having a bachelor's degree in business, retail management, or a related field strengthens the specialty occupation argument. Candidates without a degree may find TN or OPT-based pathways more straightforward depending on their nationality and status.
How long does the sponsorship and hiring process take for a Dollar General GM role?
From application to start date, Dollar General GM hiring typically runs 60 to 90 days. If H-1B sponsorship is involved and USCIS premium processing is used, adjudication can come back within 15 business days, but the PERM labor certification process for Green Card sponsorship adds significantly more time, often 12 to 24 months. Plan your application timeline around your current status expiration date to avoid gaps in work authorization.
