Frame your degree for specialty occupation
Michael Baker International files LCAs under engineering and IT job categories. Make sure your resume and transcripts clearly connect your computer science or engineering degree to the specific software role, since USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation alignment closely for consulting firm petitions.
Target infrastructure and defense-adjacent project experience
Michael Baker's software teams often support civil infrastructure, transportation, and government contracts. Highlighting experience with GIS platforms, asset management systems, or government-regulated software projects positions you as a stronger fit than candidates with purely commercial tech backgrounds.
Search open roles using Migrate Mate
Filter for Software Engineer openings at Michael Baker International that list visa sponsorship as available. Migrate Mate surfaces roles by sponsorship type, so you can prioritize positions actively open to H-1B or OPT candidates instead of cold-applying across the full job board.
Confirm your OPT timeline before accepting an offer
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm whether your STEM extension covers the gap between your start date and the next H-1B cap season. Michael Baker has sponsored both standard and STEM OPT employees, but your I-20 expiration and EAD end date determine whether a cap-gap bridge is needed.
Ask HR to specify which entity will file your petition
Michael Baker International operates through subsidiaries and joint ventures on some government contracts. Confirm that the specific legal entity offering you the role is the same one that will appear on your I-129, since a mismatch between your offer letter employer and the petitioning entity can delay USCIS processing.
Prepare for PERM documentation early if targeting a Green Card
For EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, DOL requires your employer to run a supervised recruitment process before filing PERM. Request a timeline from HR at the offer stage, since PERM alone can take 12 to 18 months before an I-140 petition can even be filed.

Find Software Engineer at Michael Baker International JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Michael Baker International sponsor H-1B visas for Software Engineers?
Yes, Michael Baker International sponsors H-1B visas for Software Engineer roles. The company has a documented history of filing H-1B petitions for engineering and technology positions. If you're targeting a role here, confirm sponsorship intent early in the recruiter conversation, since H-1B cap-subject filings require USCIS registration in March for an October start date.
How do I apply for Software Engineer jobs at Michael Baker International?
Apply directly through Michael Baker International's careers portal on their website. You can also find current Software Engineer openings filtered by visa sponsorship availability on Migrate Mate, which helps you identify roles actively open to sponsored candidates. Tailor your application to reflect experience in infrastructure, government systems, or engineering consulting to align with their project portfolio.
Which visa types does Michael Baker International commonly use for Software Engineers?
Michael Baker International sponsors H-1B visas for cap-subject candidates and supports F-1 OPT and STEM OPT for recent graduates. The company also files TN petitions for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles and sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card pathways for longer-term employees. J-1 sponsorship has also been used for certain training or exchange arrangements.
What qualifications does Michael Baker International expect for sponsored Software Engineer roles?
Most sponsored Software Engineer roles require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, which also satisfies USCIS's specialty occupation requirement for H-1B purposes. Experience with GIS, infrastructure data systems, or government-regulated software environments is frequently preferred. Candidates with backgrounds in transportation, defense, or civil engineering tech stacks tend to be competitive for their consulting project work.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take if I receive a Software Engineer offer from Michael Baker International?
Timeline depends heavily on visa type. F-1 OPT authorization is already in place before you start. H-1B cap-subject petitions require a March lottery registration with work authorization beginning October 1 at the earliest, a roughly six-month gap from offer to start. PERM-based Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 runs 18 to 36 months from initiation to I-140 approval, not counting priority date wait times.
