Align your PE licensure timeline strategically
Michael Baker International hires engineers across licensure stages, but PE-licensed candidates get prioritized for senior project roles. Start your FE exam process before applying so you can show active progress toward licensure during the hiring conversation.
Target transportation and infrastructure project openings
Michael Baker's civil engineering hiring concentrates heavily in transportation, highway design, and DOT contract work. Filter your applications toward openings tied to state DOT programs, where the firm's established project pipelines create consistent headcount demand for sponsored engineers.
Clarify OPT and CPT timing with your recruiter early
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your authorization end date in the first recruiter call. Michael Baker International has sponsored both OPT extensions and H-1B transitions, but onboarding timelines for project-based roles need to sync with your remaining work authorization window.
Understand how H-1B cap timing affects your start date
H-1B cap-subject petitions filed in April have an October 1 start date. If Michael Baker extends an offer in late spring or summer, you and your recruiter need to plan around this gap so your project assignment doesn't conflict with your authorized start date.
Request PERM sponsorship confirmation before accepting an offer
For EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship, DOL requires employers to run a PERM labor certification process. Ask your hiring manager directly whether civil engineering roles at your level are eligible for PERM sponsorship and what the firm's typical timeline looks like before signing.
Use Migrate Mate to surface visa-sponsoring civil engineering roles
Browsing general job boards makes it hard to filter for companies that actively sponsor international engineers. Use Migrate Mate to find Civil Engineer openings at Michael Baker International and similar consulting firms verified for visa sponsorship history.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Michael Baker International sponsor H-1B visas for Civil Engineers?
Yes, Michael Baker International sponsors H-1B visas for Civil Engineer roles. The company operates in the consulting and professional services space, where project-based engineering work commonly meets the H-1B specialty occupation standard. Civil engineering positions requiring at least a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field are well-suited to H-1B qualification. Confirm sponsorship eligibility with the recruiter early in the process.
Which visa types are commonly used for Civil Engineer roles at Michael Baker International?
Civil Engineers at Michael Baker International are sponsored across several visa categories including H-1B, TN visa (for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles), F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates, J-1 visa for exchange visitors, and EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant visas for candidates pursuing permanent residence. TN visas can be particularly efficient for Canadian nationals since they don't require USCIS petition approval.
What qualifications and experience does Michael Baker International expect for Civil Engineer roles?
Most Civil Engineer openings require a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field from an accredited program, which also satisfies the H-1B specialty occupation requirement. Michael Baker typically expects experience in one or more practice areas including transportation, structural, or water resources engineering. Progress toward or completion of PE licensure is a strong differentiator, particularly for project engineer and senior roles.
How do I apply for Civil Engineer jobs at Michael Baker International?
You can browse current Civil Engineer openings at Michael Baker International through Migrate Mate, which filters for roles with confirmed visa sponsorship history. When you apply, address your visa status directly in your cover letter or application notes. Consulting firms like Michael Baker move quickly on project-tied roles, so following up with the recruiter within a week of applying is standard practice.
How do I plan my timeline if Michael Baker International sponsors my H-1B as a Civil Engineer?
If you're on F-1 OPT, your employer needs to file an H-1B petition during the April cap registration window for an October 1 start. If your OPT expires before October 1 and you're STEM-eligible, a 24-month STEM OPT extension can bridge the gap. Coordinate your expected project start date with your recruiter so the firm can build the petition timeline around your authorization window and project assignment.
