Align your credentials with U.S. PE pathways
WSP values engineers progressing toward Professional Engineer licensure. If your degree is from outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved body before applying so your qualifications map cleanly to the role's stated requirements.
Target WSP's infrastructure and transportation divisions
Civil Engineer openings at WSP concentrate heavily in transportation, water systems, and municipal infrastructure. Tailoring your resume and cover letter to one of these practice areas signals fit beyond a generic civil background and shortens your path to a technical screen.
Clarify your visa category early in conversations
WSP sponsors multiple visa types for engineers, including H-1B, E-3, TN, and F-1 OPT. Knowing which category applies to you before your first recruiter call lets you frame sponsorship as a straightforward administrative step rather than an open question.
Time your OPT application before your program ends
If you're on F-1 status, USCIS recommends filing your OPT EAD application up to 90 days before your program end date. Starting before you have a WSP offer in hand means you won't lose work authorization while the hiring process runs its course.
Understand how PERM affects engineering green card timelines
For EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, WSP must complete DOL's PERM labor certification before filing an immigrant petition. This process typically takes 12 to 18 months on its own, so raise long-term immigration goals during the offer stage, not after you've already started.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Civil Engineer roles at WSP
Civil Engineer positions at WSP are posted across multiple locations and practice areas simultaneously. Use Migrate Mate to filter WSP openings by visa type so you're only reviewing roles where sponsorship matches your specific immigration situation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does WSP sponsor H-1B visas for Civil Engineers?
Yes, WSP sponsors H-1B visas for Civil Engineers. Civil engineering qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS criteria, requiring at minimum a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field. Because H-1B availability depends on the annual cap and lottery, timing your job search so an offer can be in place before the April filing window is practical preparation.
How do I apply for Civil Engineer jobs at WSP?
Applications go through WSP's careers portal, where roles are listed by region and practice area. Migrate Mate lets you browse WSP's Civil Engineer openings filtered by the visa types you're eligible for, which saves time if you're targeting sponsorship-friendly positions specifically. Tailor your application to the technical discipline, whether that's transportation, water, or structural, rather than submitting a generic resume.
Which visa types does WSP commonly use for Civil Engineer roles?
WSP sponsors H-1B, E-3 visa, TN visa, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and employment-based Green Cards including EB-2 and EB-3 for Civil Engineers. Australian citizens are well positioned for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and allows two-year renewable status. Canadian and Mexican engineers in qualifying civil disciplines can often enter on TN visa status, which is processed at the port of entry without a prior USCIS petition.
What qualifications does WSP expect for Civil Engineer positions?
Most Civil Engineer roles at WSP require a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related discipline from an accredited program. Candidates progressing toward or holding a Professional Engineer license are strongly preferred for mid-level and senior positions. Project-specific technical skills, such as hydraulic modeling, roadway design, or structural analysis, carry significant weight depending on which WSP practice area you're targeting.
How do I plan my timeline if WSP is sponsoring my visa?
The timeline depends on your visa category. H-1B sponsorship requires USCIS lottery selection in March and employment starting no earlier than October 1, so aligning your offer with that cycle matters. E-3 and TN petitions move faster, often within a few weeks of an offer. For Green Card sponsorship through PERM, expect the DOL labor certification process alone to take over a year before an immigrant petition can be filed.
