Tips for Finding Civil Engineer Jobs at BKF Engineers
Align Your Portfolio to BKF's Project Types
BKF Engineers works heavily in land development, site civil, and transportation infrastructure. Organize your portfolio around grading plans, utility design, or traffic studies so your experience maps directly to the projects their teams deliver.
Obtain Your EIT Credential Before Applying
Engineering consulting firms evaluate candidates on licensure trajectory. Passing the FE exam and holding an Engineer-in-Training credential signals to BKF that you're progressing toward PE licensure, which is a practical threshold for advancement in their civil engineering roles.
Target BKF's Regional Offices Strategically
BKF operates across multiple California offices and in the Pacific Northwest. Research which office is actively recruiting in your discipline, since land development hiring in their Bay Area offices often moves on a different cycle than transportation-focused roles elsewhere.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Open Civil Engineer Roles
BKF Engineers posts Civil Engineer openings across locations and seniority levels. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for roles at BKF that support employment-based sponsorship, so you're only investing time in positions where your visa pathway is already accounted for.
Clarify Sponsorship Type During Initial Interviews
BKF has sponsored through both EB-2 and EB-3 pathways. During your first substantive conversation with a recruiter, confirm which category applies to your role, since the required experience thresholds and PERM documentation requirements differ meaningfully between the two.
Anticipate the PERM Labor Certification Timeline
Employment-based Green Card sponsorship through DOL's PERM process can take 12 to 18 months before an I-140 is even filed. Build that timeline into your planning when evaluating an offer from BKF, especially if you're transitioning from a nonimmigrant status with a fixed end date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does BKF Engineers sponsor H-1B visas for Civil Engineers?
BKF Engineers' primary sponsorship activity for Civil Engineers has been through employment-based immigrant visa categories rather than H-1B visa. If you're currently on H-1B status with another employer, a transfer to BKF is possible, but confirm directly with their HR team whether they're prepared to assume H-1B sponsorship responsibilities for the specific role you're targeting.
Which visa types are commonly used for Civil Engineer roles at BKF Engineers?
BKF Engineers has sponsored Civil Engineers through the EB-2 and EB-3 immigrant visa categories, both of which require the company to complete the DOL PERM labor certification process. EB-2 applies to roles requiring an advanced degree or exceptional ability, while EB-3 covers positions that typically require a bachelor's degree and at least two years of relevant experience.
What qualifications or experience are expected for Civil Engineer positions at BKF Engineers?
BKF Engineers typically expects candidates to hold a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited program. For mid-level roles, two to five years of experience in site civil, land development, or transportation is common. Proficiency in tools like AutoCAD Civil 3D is often required, and progress toward PE licensure is a strong differentiator in their hiring process.
How do I apply for Civil Engineer jobs at BKF Engineers?
You can browse and apply for Civil Engineer positions at BKF Engineers directly through Migrate Mate, which filters for roles that include employment-based visa sponsorship. When applying, tailor your resume to reflect BKF's core service areas, specifically site civil, grading, and infrastructure. Following up with the relevant regional office recruiter after submitting can also improve your response rate.
How do I plan around the timeline for employment-based sponsorship at BKF Engineers?
If BKF Engineers initiates PERM-based Green Card sponsorship for your role, expect the DOL labor certification stage alone to take 12 months or more before USCIS receives the I-140 petition. Country of birth significantly affects wait times after that. Start the conversation about sponsorship intent early in the offer negotiation so both you and the company can plan the process without gaps in your work authorization.
