Align your credentials to Garver's practice areas
Garver staffs Civil Engineers across transportation, water resources, and structural disciplines. Tailor your resume to reflect the specific practice area you're targeting, not civil engineering broadly, so recruiters can match you to active project needs.
Clarify your visa type before applying
Consulting firms like Garver manage client-site placements alongside office-based work, which affects how they structure LCA filings with DOL. Know whether your status is F-1 OPT, TN, or H-1B before your first recruiter conversation so you can address worksite questions directly.
Target Garver offices in states with active infrastructure funding
Garver's project pipeline is tied to state DOT contracts and municipal infrastructure programs. Applying to offices in regions with high infrastructure investment increases your chances of landing a role with immediate billable work, which strengthens the business case for sponsorship.
Prepare your PE licensure timeline as a sponsorship asset
Garver hires engineers at various stages of licensure, but demonstrating a clear path to your Professional Engineer credential signals long-term value to the firm. Be ready to discuss your EIT status and projected PE exam timeline during interviews.
Understand the gap between OPT and H-1B filing windows
If you're on F-1 OPT, your employer must file your H-1B petition with USCIS by April 1 for an October 1 start. Coordinate your offer timing with Garver's HR team to confirm they can initiate the petition before your OPT authorization expires.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Civil Engineer roles at Garver
Not all of Garver's open positions appear in the same place or carry the same sponsorship signals. Use Migrate Mate to filter and browse Civil Engineer jobs at Garver that are verified for visa sponsorship eligibility, so you're targeting the right openings from the start.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Garver sponsor H-1B visas for Civil Engineers?
Yes, Garver has an established pattern of sponsoring H-1B visas for Civil Engineers. As an engineering and consulting firm working on long-term infrastructure projects, Garver has both the internal HR infrastructure and the project continuity to support H-1B petitions. You should confirm sponsorship availability for the specific role and office location during the recruiting process, as project staffing needs vary by region.
Which visa types does Garver commonly use for Civil Engineer roles?
Garver sponsors Civil Engineers through several pathways, including H-1B, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for students in eligible engineering programs, J-1 visa for exchange visitors, and employment-based Green Cards through EB-2 and EB-3 categories. The right pathway depends on your nationality, education level, and how far along you are in your career. Garver's HR team typically works with immigration counsel to identify the best fit.
How do I apply for Civil Engineer jobs at Garver?
You can find and apply to Civil Engineer positions at Garver through Migrate Mate, which filters for roles verified for visa sponsorship eligibility. When you apply, make sure your resume reflects the specific practice area you're targeting, such as transportation, water, or structural engineering, since Garver recruits by discipline. Follow up with the recruiting team to confirm sponsorship is available for your specific visa category before your first interview.
What qualifications does Garver expect for Civil Engineer roles?
Garver generally expects a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related discipline from an ABET-accredited program. For most roles, an Engineer in Training credential and progress toward a Professional Engineer license are strong assets. Project experience in areas like roadway design, hydraulic modeling, or structural analysis is valued. More senior roles may require PE licensure and demonstrated client management or project delivery experience.
How do I plan my timeline around Garver's sponsorship process?
For H-1B sponsorship, USCIS opens the registration window in March each year, with petitions filed by April 1 for an October 1 start date. If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT, you need to account for the gap between your OPT expiration and the H-1B effective date, which may require a cap-gap extension. For TN and Green Card pathways through PERM, timelines differ significantly, and you should discuss specifics with Garver's HR team early in the offer process.
