Align your credentials to Kiewit's project scope
Kiewit hires Civil Engineers for heavy civil and energy projects, including substations, pipelines, and transmission infrastructure. Highlight site engineering, construction management, or EPC project experience on your resume. Generic civil credentials get passed over for field-ready ones.
Target roles that map to your current visa status
Kiewit posts Civil Engineer roles across disciplines and seniority levels. If you're on F-1 OPT, apply to roles with defined project start dates since your authorization window is fixed at 12 months, or 24 months with a STEM extension for qualifying engineering degrees.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Kiewit's open Civil Engineer positions
Kiewit's job board lists hundreds of engineering openings, making it hard to isolate sponsorship-eligible roles. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Kiewit Civil Engineer positions that align with your visa type and location requirements.
Understand how Kiewit structures its H-1B petitions
Kiewit files H-1B petitions tied to specific project locations, which means your LCA is site-specific. If you're placed on a different project after filing, your employer must post a new LCA at that worksite before you begin work there.
Prepare your PE licensure documentation early
Many Civil Engineer roles at Kiewit, especially at the project or senior level, list Professional Engineer licensure as a requirement or strong preference. If your degree is from outside the U.S., start the foreign credential evaluation process through NCEES well before you begin interviewing.
Factor PERM timelines into your job search planning
If your goal is a Green Card through EB-2 or EB-3, understand that PERM labor certification currently takes over a year at the DOL. Starting that conversation with a hiring manager or HR before you accept an offer helps avoid being caught mid-process without a clear path.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Kiewit sponsor H-1B visas for Civil Engineers?
Yes, Kiewit sponsors H-1B visas for Civil Engineer roles. As a large infrastructure contractor with projects across the energy sector, Kiewit has an established process for filing H-1B petitions tied to specific worksites. Because roles are often project-based, your petition will reference the project location, and your employer must file a new Labor Condition Application with the DOL if your assignment changes significantly.
Which visa types does Kiewit commonly use for Civil Engineer roles?
Kiewit supports several visa categories for Civil Engineers, including H-1B for specialty occupation workers, F-1 OPT and CPT for students and recent graduates, TN for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles, and J-1 visa for interns or trainees. For longer-term employees, Kiewit also sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card petitions through the PERM labor certification process at the DOL.
What qualifications does Kiewit expect for sponsored Civil Engineer positions?
Kiewit typically expects a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a closely related field for H-1B eligibility. For field-facing roles, hands-on experience in heavy civil or energy construction is a strong differentiator. Senior roles often require or prefer a Professional Engineer license. If your degree is from outside the U.S., a credential evaluation from a recognized evaluation service will likely be required during the hiring process.
How do I apply for Civil Engineer jobs at Kiewit?
You can browse and apply for Civil Engineer positions at Kiewit directly through their careers portal. For a faster search filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility, use Migrate Mate to surface Kiewit's open Civil Engineer roles alongside sponsorship details. When applying, tailor your resume to reflect the specific project type in the job posting, whether that's transmission, substation, pipeline, or other energy infrastructure work.
How do I time my application if I'm on OPT and targeting a Kiewit role?
If you're on F-1 OPT, apply to Kiewit roles at least three to four months before your OPT expires. Kiewit's H-1B cap-subject filings are submitted in April for an October 1 start, so timing your offer around that window matters. If you have a STEM degree, your 24-month OPT extension gives you additional runway and makes you eligible to be employed through two H-1B filing cycles if the first lottery registration is unsuccessful.
