Align your credentials to U.S. licensing standards
Kiewit's structural roles on energy projects often require or prefer EIT certification and progress toward PE licensure. Get your foreign engineering degree evaluated by a NACES-approved credential service before you apply, so your qualifications translate clearly on a U.S. resume.
Target project-based openings over corporate postings
Kiewit staffs Structural Engineers at the project level, so roles tied to active energy builds move faster than general pipeline postings. Search by region and project type to find openings where hiring timelines are driven by construction milestones, not annual headcount cycles.
Confirm OPT or CPT eligibility before your start date
If you're on an F-1 visa, your OPT authorization must be active before your first day. Kiewit uses E-Verify, so your work authorization is confirmed at onboarding. Apply to USCIS for OPT at least 90 days before your intended start date to avoid gaps.
Understand how PERM fits Kiewit's sponsorship approach
For EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card sponsorship, Kiewit must run a DOL PERM labor market test before filing an immigrant petition. This process typically takes 12 to 18 months and requires the role to have been offered at the prevailing wage throughout, so raise permanent residency goals early in your offer negotiation.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Kiewit's live structural openings
Kiewit posts Structural Engineer roles across multiple divisions simultaneously, and not all are easy to track. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Kiewit openings that include visa sponsorship, so you're applying to roles where international candidates are actively considered.
Prepare for a technical interview focused on energy project experience
Kiewit's Structural Engineer interviews go deep on project execution, not just theory. Expect questions on structural analysis for industrial loads, material selection for energy facilities, and how you've handled design-build coordination. Frame your experience around projects similar to power or industrial construction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Kiewit sponsor H-1B visas for Structural Engineers?
Yes, Kiewit sponsors H-1B visas for Structural Engineers. The H-1B is the most common pathway for international engineers at construction and EPC firms of Kiewit's scale. Because H-1B cap-subject petitions are subject to an annual lottery, timing your offer and filing around the April 1 registration window is critical if you're not already in H-1B status.
How do I apply for Structural Engineer jobs at Kiewit?
Apply through Kiewit's careers portal or use Migrate Mate to browse Structural Engineer openings at Kiewit that are open to visa sponsorship. Kiewit hires at the district and project level, so applications are routed to regional teams. Tailor your resume to reflect energy or industrial project experience and include your work authorization status clearly.
Which visa types does Kiewit commonly use for Structural Engineer roles?
Kiewit supports H-1B, TN visa (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, J-1 visa, and employment-based Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for Structural Engineers. TN visa can be a faster alternative to H-1B for qualifying nationals, as it doesn't require lottery selection and can be processed at the port of entry.
What qualifications does Kiewit expect for Structural Engineer roles?
Kiewit typically requires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering from an accredited program. For energy project roles, experience with industrial structural systems, familiarity with AISC and ACI standards, and proficiency in structural analysis software such as STAAD or SAP2000 are common expectations. EIT certification is often preferred, and PE licensure is valued for senior positions.
How long does Kiewit's sponsorship and onboarding process typically take?
Timeline depends on your visa type. OPT extensions and TN status can move quickly, often within weeks. H-1B cap-subject petitions follow USCIS's annual cycle, with premium processing reducing approval time to around 15 business days once filed. EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through DOL PERM adds 12 to 18 months before the immigrant petition stage, so start those conversations during the offer process.
