In this role you will partner with national industry leaders and local experts on large, high-visibility projects for strategic clients (including the USACE and other Northwest public agencies). As a Project Manager, you will lead interdisciplinary design teams, drive creative, community-focused solutions, and play a central role in shaping impactful projects. This position offers excellent opportunities for both technical growth and visible leadership across a diverse portfolio of complex infrastructure work.
Essential Job Functions:
The following duties are essential to this role. Reasonable accommodation will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these functions.
- Lead and manage complex, multi-discipline infrastructure projects including civil works (flood protection, navigation locks, dam structures), waterfront structures, and pump stations.
- Provide hands on project management and oversight of project execution by delivering projects on time, within scope, and on budget while exceeding client expectations.
- Perform structural design and analysis for new, replacement, and existing structures using hand calculations and finite element analysis for reinforced concrete and structural steel systems.
- Design and analyze structures to meet project specific and code requirements utilizing both hand and finite element analysis. Experience with seismic analysis is desirable.
- Lead the development of complete engineering calculation packages and clear, well organized technical documentation.
- Tackle complex engineering challenges by selecting, adapting, and innovating standard methods and, when appropriate, developing new solutions.
- Champion project quality through a robust QA/QC process and proactive technical reviews.
- Prepare clear, constructible contract documents, including plans, specifications, reports and addenda.
- Produce and review technical reports and client deliverables with a focus on clarity and actionable recommendations.
- Work closely with business development teams to pursue new opportunities: cultivate client relationships, scope projects, prepare compelling proposals and cost estimates, and support contract negotiations.
- Drive client satisfaction and repeat business; collaborate with managers and technical experts to market services and recruit top talent.
- Coordinate design solutions with clients, contractors, and internal disciplines through engaging presentations, design review meetings, and training.
- Mentor and develop staff—set performance expectations, give constructive feedback, and foster an inclusive culture that supports career growth.
- Consult with suppliers, fabricators, or contractors to interpret specifications and resolve technical challenges.
Requirements Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or structural engineering.
- 15+ years of relevant structural engineering experience, including a proven track record of successful project management and delivery of civil works or water-related structural projects.
- An active Professional Engineer (PE) certification.
- Demonstrated expertise in reinforced concrete and structural steel design, detailing, and preparation of construction documents (plans, details, specifications).
- A proven ability to lead multi-discipline engineering teams to produce high quality drawings, calculations, specifications, and cost estimates.
- Significant business development experience: identifying opportunities, leading capture efforts, and preparing persuasive proposals (experience with on call/IDIQ contracts preferred).
- Proficiency with advanced structural analysis / FEA software such as SAP2000, ANSYS, LPILE, or comparable tools. Comfortable with Microsoft Office; familiarity with CADD/BIM workflows is desired.
- Experience consulting with suppliers, fabricators, or contractors to interpret specifications and resolve technical challenges.
- Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills; confidence in presenting to clients and stakeholders.
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills; able to work independently and collaboratively in person and virtually.
- Passion for mentoring and developing technical staff and for making decisions that advance company goals.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in structural engineering or related field.
- Experience with USACE or other federal/local government clients and contracting processes is a plus.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to travel for meetings, conferences, site visits, and shop fabrication visits as needed. Travel is estimated to be up to 20% yearly (occasional overnight travel).
- Ability to stand or walk for long periods during site visits, including the ability to kneel, crouch, or stoop.
- Ability to walk up stairs and climb ladders.
- Ability to work outdoors in a range of weather conditions (heat, rain, wind, cold) for extended periods.
- Ability to sit at a workstation and use a computer for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours/day). Additional hours may be required based on project needs.
- Manual dexterity to use a computer mouse, keyboard, and other tools.
- Visual acuity to read and interpret detailed drawings and technical documents.
- Ability to communicate effectively in-person and via electronic means.

Align Your Portfolio With Infrastructure Projects
Tetra Tech's structural work spans water infrastructure, federal facilities, and disaster resilience projects. Tailor your resume and project portfolio to highlight experience in these sectors before applying, since generic structural experience is less compelling than domain-matched work.
Get Your PE Licensure Process Started Early
Many Structural Engineer roles in consulting require or strongly prefer a Professional Engineer license. If you're an international candidate still working toward PE eligibility, document your supervised hours carefully, as this credential directly affects your offer level and project assignment scope at a firm like Tetra Tech.
Target Offices Near Active Federal Contracts
Tetra Tech's sponsorship activity for Structural Engineers tends to concentrate where government and infrastructure work is heaviest. Research which regional offices hold active federal or municipal contracts and direct your applications there rather than applying broadly across all locations.
Ask HR Directly About LCA Timing
Once you receive an offer, ask Tetra Tech's HR team when they plan to file the Labor Condition Application with DOL. The LCA must be certified before USCIS can adjudicate your H-1B petition, and delays here can compress your start date significantly.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open Roles Efficiently
Structural Engineer openings at Tetra Tech are spread across dozens of office locations and project types. Use Migrate Mate to filter and track Tetra Tech postings that explicitly support visa sponsorship so you're targeting the right positions from the start.

Find Structural Engineer at Tetra Tech JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Tetra Tech sponsor H-1B visas for Structural Engineers?
Yes, Tetra Tech sponsors H-1B visas for Structural Engineers. The company operates across consulting, federal services, and infrastructure sectors where specialty occupation requirements are clearly met for licensed and degree-holding engineers. If you're in the H-1B lottery process, confirm with the recruiting team that your specific role and office location are included in their annual filing cycle.
How do I apply for Structural Engineer jobs at Tetra Tech?
Apply directly through Tetra Tech's careers portal or find open Structural Engineer roles filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate. When applying, emphasize your technical discipline and any relevant sector experience in infrastructure, water systems, or federal projects. Mention your visa status upfront in your cover note or recruiter outreach so sponsorship timelines can be assessed early.
Which visa types does Tetra Tech commonly use for Structural Engineer hires?
Tetra Tech sponsors H-1B, TN, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and J-1 visas for Structural Engineers. H-1B is the most common long-term pathway for candidates staying beyond OPT. TN visas apply to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles under USMCA. F-1 OPT and CPT are used for recent graduates transitioning from campus into their first professional roles.
What qualifications does Tetra Tech expect from Structural Engineer candidates?
Tetra Tech typically looks for a bachelor's degree or higher in civil or structural engineering from an accredited program, along with relevant project experience in their core sectors. An Engineer-in-Training certification or active PE license is a strong advantage and often required for senior-level roles. Familiarity with analysis software like ETABS, SAP2000, or RAM Structural System is commonly expected.
How do I handle visa timing if I receive an offer from Tetra Tech?
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your expiration date immediately and check whether a STEM extension is available to bridge you to the next H-1B cap season. USCIS opens H-1B registration each March for an October 1 start date, so offers made outside that window may require gap planning. Tetra Tech's HR team can advise on whether they use premium processing to expedite adjudication.
