Align your portfolio with Thornton Tomasetti's project types
Thornton Tomasetti works across high-rise, civic, and infrastructure projects. Before applying, tailor your portfolio to show relevant structural analysis and design work. Generic portfolios don't stand out at a firm that evaluates technical depth closely.
Get your credentials evaluated before applying
If you completed your engineering degree outside the U.S., get a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved body before you apply. Thornton Tomasetti expects candidates to demonstrate degree equivalency for PE licensure pathways, which matters for sponsorship petitions too.
Understand which visa fits your citizenship and timeline
Australian citizens can pursue the E-3 visa, which bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely and processes faster. Canadian or Mexican engineers may qualify for TN status. Knowing your visa category before your offer conversation puts you ahead of most applicants.
Ask about sponsorship during the offer stage, not before
Raising visa sponsorship too early in the process can stall your candidacy. Wait until you have a verbal offer, then confirm Thornton Tomasetti will file the petition. At that stage, the conversation is practical, not speculative.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Structural Engineer roles at Thornton Tomasetti
Migrate Mate filters job listings by visa sponsorship history and role type. Search specifically for Structural Engineer positions at Thornton Tomasetti to find active openings where sponsorship has been documented for this function.
Track your H-1B timeline against the annual cap registration window
H-1B cap registration opens each March for an October 1 start date. If you're finishing OPT or CPT, map your authorization expiry against this window. Missing the registration period means waiting another full year, so plan your application timing with your employer well in advance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Thornton Tomasetti sponsor H-1B visas for Structural Engineers?
Yes, Thornton Tomasetti sponsors H-1B visas for Structural Engineers. The firm has an established pattern of filing H-1B petitions for engineering roles, which require specialized technical knowledge in structural analysis, design software, and building codes. H-1B sponsorship typically requires your employer to file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before submitting the petition to USCIS.
How do I apply for Structural Engineer jobs at Thornton Tomasetti?
Apply directly through Thornton Tomasetti's careers portal, where roles are listed by office location and discipline. Migrate Mate also aggregates their open Structural Engineer positions and filters by visa sponsorship history, making it easier to identify relevant roles without sifting through listings that don't support international candidates. Tailor your application to the specific project type and office you're targeting.
Which visa types does Thornton Tomasetti commonly use for Structural Engineer roles?
Thornton Tomasetti sponsors several visa categories for Structural Engineers, including H-1B, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals, and Green Card pathways through EB-2 and EB-3. The firm also works with candidates on F-1 OPT and CPT, and supports J-1 visa exchange visitor status in some cases. The right visa depends on your nationality, degree, and timeline.
What qualifications does Thornton Tomasetti expect from Structural Engineer candidates?
Thornton Tomasetti typically looks for a bachelor's or master's degree in civil or structural engineering, proficiency in structural analysis tools such as ETABS, SAP2000, or RAM, and familiarity with U.S. building codes including AISC and ACI standards. Progress toward or completion of the PE license is valued, particularly for mid to senior-level roles. Project experience in complex building typologies strengthens your candidacy significantly.
How do I time my visa sponsorship process when joining Thornton Tomasetti as a Structural Engineer?
Timing depends on your current status. If you're on F-1 OPT, you can begin work immediately while your employer files for H-1B cap registration in March. If you're outside the U.S. and eligible for E-3 or TN, consular processing can move faster than USCIS adjudication. USCIS premium processing is available for H-1B petitions and reduces the adjudication window to 15 business days, which helps align your start date with project needs.
