Highlight PE licensure progress on your resume
Thornton Tomasetti values candidates moving toward Professional Engineer licensure. Document your EIT status and FE exam results prominently. Consulting firms often factor licensure trajectory into sponsorship decisions because it signals long-term value and billability to clients.
Target offices with active project pipelines
Thornton Tomasetti staffs Structural Project Engineers regionally based on active workload. Research which offices are winning contracts in your structural specialty, whether that is building renovation, healthcare, or high-rise. A location with immediate project need is far more likely to move quickly on sponsorship.
Align your portfolio to the firm's signature project types
Thornton Tomasetti is heavily engaged in adaptive reuse, tall buildings, and seismic work. Tailor your portfolio to show relevant structural analysis and documentation experience. Interviewers will ask about specific software proficiency, so prepare to demonstrate ETABS, SAP2000, or RAM Structural System experience directly.
Clarify your visa status before the offer stage
Confirm with HR whether your role qualifies under H-1B, E-3, or TN before an offer is extended. Structural engineering consistently meets the USCIS specialty occupation standard, but the petition still requires your degree to match the role. Resolving this early prevents delays once hiring decisions are made.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles by sponsored visa type
Search for Structural Project Engineer openings at Thornton Tomasetti filtered by the visa categories relevant to your situation. Migrate Mate surfaces roles where sponsorship is confirmed, so you can focus your applications on positions that are actually accessible to international candidates.
Understand PERM implications if Green Card is your goal
If permanent residence is part of your plan, ask during late-stage interviews whether Thornton Tomasetti initiates PERM for Structural Project Engineers. Large consulting firms vary on timing, and some require two or more years of tenure before sponsoring EB-2 or EB-3 PERM filings. Knowing this upfront shapes your expectations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Thornton Tomasetti sponsor H-1B visas for Structural Project Engineers?
Yes, Thornton Tomasetti sponsors H-1B visas for Structural Project Engineers. Structural engineering meets the USCIS specialty occupation requirement because the role typically demands at minimum a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering. Keep in mind that H-1B sponsorship for new candidates is subject to the annual lottery, so your start date will depend on the April selection cycle and a potential October 1 start.
How do I apply for Structural Project Engineer jobs at Thornton Tomasetti?
Applications go through Thornton Tomasetti's careers portal. Prepare a resume that emphasizes structural analysis experience, relevant software proficiency, and any licensure progress. You can also browse current openings filtered by visa sponsorship availability on Migrate Mate, which helps you identify which specific postings are accessible to international candidates before you invest time applying.
Which visa types does Thornton Tomasetti commonly use for Structural Project Engineers?
Thornton Tomasetti sponsors across several categories for this role, including H-1B, E-3 visa for Australian citizens, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for students in authorized programs, J-1 visa for exchange visitors, and EB-2 or EB-3 for permanent residence. The right category depends on your nationality, degree level, and how long you need authorization.
What qualifications does Thornton Tomasetti expect for a sponsored Structural Project Engineer role?
A bachelor's or master's degree in civil or structural engineering is the baseline. Thornton Tomasetti typically looks for candidates with direct structural analysis experience, proficiency in software such as ETABS, SAP2000, or RAM, and for more senior project engineer roles, experience managing deliverables and coordinating with project teams. EIT or PE licensure progress strengthens your candidacy and supports the specialty occupation case for H-1B petitions.
How do I time my application if I'm on F-1 OPT and targeting Thornton Tomasetti?
If your OPT expires before an H-1B can take effect, a cap-gap extension covers the period between your OPT end date and October 1, provided your employer files an H-1B petition before your OPT expires. Start the process early in your OPT period. Thornton Tomasetti's HR team is familiar with this timeline, but confirm their internal deadlines for initiating sponsorship paperwork.
