Tailor your resume to PE licensure expectations
Thornton Tomasetti values candidates progressing toward a Professional Engineer license. Frame your resume around project delivery experience, technical software proficiency, and any EIT certification to signal you're on that trajectory before the first screen.
Target offices by structural discipline and workload
Thornton Tomasetti's Project Engineer openings vary significantly by office and practice group. Research which locations focus on the disciplines matching your background, such as building structures or facades, since hiring demand and sponsorship appetite can differ by region.
Confirm specialty occupation alignment before applying
For H-1B eligibility, your role must qualify as a specialty occupation under USCIS criteria. At Thornton Tomasetti, Project Engineer positions in structural or forensic engineering typically meet this threshold, but verify your specific job description maps to a degree requirement in engineering.
Ask about sponsorship timing during offer negotiation
H-1B cap-subject filings follow an October 1 start date, so if you're interviewing outside lottery season, clarify whether the offer accommodates a delayed start or if cap-exempt status applies through any affiliated academic partnerships Thornton Tomasetti maintains.
Use Migrate Mate to filter live Project Engineer openings
Thornton Tomasetti posts Project Engineer roles across multiple offices at different times of year. Use Migrate Mate to filter open positions by visa type so you're applying to roles where sponsorship is already confirmed, not guessing from a generic careers page.
Understand DOL prevailing wage requirements for your location
For both H-1B and E-3 petitions, your employer files a Labor Condition Application with the DOL certifying your wage meets prevailing levels for the job location. Knowing the wage tier for your target office helps you negotiate a competitive offer that won't stall the LCA.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Thornton Tomasetti sponsor H-1B visas for Project Engineers?
Yes, Thornton Tomasetti sponsors H-1B visas for Project Engineer roles. The position typically qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards given its requirement for a bachelor's degree or higher in civil or structural engineering. Cap-subject petitions must align with the annual lottery window, so timing your offer and start date around the April filing period matters.
Which visa types are commonly used for Project Engineer roles at Thornton Tomasetti?
Thornton Tomasetti supports several visa pathways for Project Engineers, including H-1B, E-3 for Australian citizens, TN visa for Canadian and Mexican nationals, F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates, and J-1 visa for exchange visitors. For longer-term employment, the company also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for engineers who qualify.
What qualifications and experience does Thornton Tomasetti expect for Project Engineer roles?
Thornton Tomasetti typically expects a bachelor's or master's degree in civil, structural, or a related engineering discipline. Candidates progressing toward or holding a Professional Engineer license are preferred. Hands-on experience with structural analysis software, project delivery under senior engineers, and strong technical documentation skills are consistently emphasized across open roles.
How do I apply for Project Engineer jobs at Thornton Tomasetti?
You can browse and apply for Project Engineer positions at Thornton Tomasetti directly through their careers portal or through Migrate Mate, which filters open roles by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm eligibility before applying. Tailor your application to the specific practice group and office location, as hiring is decentralized across disciplines.
How do I plan my timeline for H-1B or E-3 sponsorship at Thornton Tomasetti?
For H-1B sponsorship, your employer must file during the April registration window for an October 1 start, so secure your offer by March at the latest. E-3 visas for Australian citizens have no lottery and can be filed year-round, with most consular appointments processed within a few weeks. Both require a certified Labor Condition Application from the DOL before filing.
