Align your credentials to NCEES standards
Michael Baker International frequently hires engineers toward PE licensure. Before applying, confirm your foreign degree is evaluated by an NCEES-recognized credential evaluator so your application clears their internal review without delays.
Target project-specific openings over generic postings
Michael Baker staffs Structural Project Engineers by region and active contract. Search their careers page by state and infrastructure sector to find roles tied to funded DOT or federal projects, which are more likely to move quickly through hiring.
Clarify your OPT or CPT authorization upfront
If you're on F-1 OPT, confirm your STEM extension eligibility before your first interview. Michael Baker operates as an E-Verify employer, so your work authorization status needs to be documented and current before onboarding begins.
Ask about PERM timing during the offer stage
For EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship, the PERM labor certification process through DOL typically takes 12 to 18 months before an I-140 petition can be filed. Raise this timeline with your hiring manager or recruiter before accepting an offer to set realistic expectations.
Use Migrate Mate to identify active openings quickly
Structural Project Engineer roles at Michael Baker open frequently across different regions. Use Migrate Mate to filter visa-sponsoring positions by role and location so you're applying to openings that match your authorization type and geographic preference.
Prepare project documentation that maps to USCIS specialty occupation criteria
H-1B approval for Structural Project Engineers depends on demonstrating the role requires a specific bachelor's degree or higher. Compile a portfolio of past structural projects that clearly connects your engineering discipline to the responsibilities in the job description.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Michael Baker International sponsor H-1B visas for Structural Project Engineers?
Yes, Michael Baker International sponsors H-1B visas for Structural Project Engineers. The role qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS criteria because it requires at minimum a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering. Sponsorship is typically initiated after an offer is extended, and the company has sponsored across multiple visa categories for engineering roles.
Which visa types are commonly used for Structural Project Engineer roles at Michael Baker International?
Michael Baker International sponsors H-1B, TN visa, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, J-1 visa, and employment-based Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for Structural Project Engineers. TN visas are available to Canadian and Mexican engineers who qualify under the USMCA professional categories. EB-2 and EB-3 routes involve PERM labor certification through DOL before the immigrant petition is filed.
What qualifications and experience are expected for Structural Project Engineer roles at Michael Baker International?
Most openings require a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, with preference for candidates who hold or are pursuing a Professional Engineer license. Experience in bridge design, transportation infrastructure, or federal project delivery is particularly relevant given Michael Baker's core contract portfolio. Proficiency in structural analysis software such as MIDAS or LEAP Bridge is commonly listed in postings.
How do I apply for Structural Project Engineer jobs at Michael Baker International?
You can apply directly through Michael Baker International's careers portal or find current openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate. When applying, tailor your resume to the specific infrastructure sector listed in the posting, such as transportation or federal buildings. Clearly state your visa status and authorization timeline so the recruiting team can assess sponsorship fit from the start.
How do I plan around H-1B cap timing if I'm targeting a Structural Project Engineer offer?
H-1B cap-subject petitions are filed once per year, with the registration window typically opening in March and an October 1 start date if selected. If you receive an offer from Michael Baker International outside this window, ask whether a cap-exempt arrangement or an F-1 OPT bridge is feasible to cover the gap. Coordinating your job search timeline around the USCIS registration window significantly reduces start-date delays.
