Align your transcripts with infrastructure specializations
Michael Baker recruits interns into transportation, water, and structural project teams. Before applying, pull transcripts and highlight coursework in geotechnical engineering, hydraulics, or transportation design. Hiring managers match academic focus to active project pipelines, so a generic resume undersells your fit.
Target offices near active DOT contracts
Michael Baker wins state DOT contracts that drive intern headcount in specific regional offices. Research their publicly listed project wins to identify which locations are actively staffing. Applying to offices with funded infrastructure work increases the likelihood your internship converts to a sponsored full-time role.
Confirm CPT eligibility before your start date
For F-1 students, CPT authorization must be in place before your first day. Coordinate with your DSO at least four weeks out. Michael Baker's HR team is experienced with OPT and CPT paperwork, but the timing obligation sits entirely with you and your university.
Ask about return-offer timelines during your interview
Many consulting firms convert strong interns to full-time hires, which is when H-1B sponsorship becomes relevant. Ask directly whether the office has a return-offer process and what the typical timeline looks like. Understanding this early lets you plan your OPT start date and H-1B registration window accordingly.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open intern roles by location
Michael Baker posts Civil Engineering Intern openings across dozens of offices simultaneously, and availability shifts quickly with contract cycles. Use Migrate Mate to filter active listings by location and visa sponsorship type, so you're applying to offices that are actively hiring rather than chasing stale postings.
Prepare your credential documentation before an offer arrives
Once an offer is extended, H-1B or TN processing moves quickly and your employer needs specific documents fast. Have your degree certificates, transcripts, and any Professional Engineer exam results organized and ready. Delays on your end can push filing timelines past critical USCIS registration or cap deadlines.

Find Civil Engineering Intern at Michael Baker International JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Michael Baker International sponsor H-1B visas for Civil Engineering Interns?
Yes, Michael Baker International has a documented history of sponsoring H-1B visas for engineering roles, including positions that begin at the intern level and convert to full-time. H-1B sponsorship typically applies once you transition to a permanent role after your internship, since H-1B status requires a specialty occupation position with a degree requirement. Your OPT period bridges the gap between your internship and that filing.
How do I apply for Civil Engineering Intern jobs at Michael Baker International?
Applications go through Michael Baker International's careers portal, where intern postings are listed by office location and project discipline. You can also browse and filter open Civil Engineering Intern roles on Migrate Mate, which surfaces sponsorship-friendly listings and helps you identify which offices are actively hiring. Apply directly to roles that match your academic focus, whether transportation, structural, water resources, or environmental engineering.
Which visa types are commonly used for Civil Engineering Intern roles at Michael Baker International?
F-1 CPT and F-1 OPT are the most common visa types used during the internship itself, since both allow international students to work in roles directly tied to their degree. For full-time conversions after graduation, Michael Baker has sponsored H-1B, TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), EB-2, and EB-3 green card pathways. J-1 exchange visitor status is also accepted for eligible intern candidates.
What qualifications are expected for Civil Engineering Intern positions at Michael Baker International?
Most Civil Engineering Intern roles require active enrollment in a bachelor's or master's civil engineering program, with a preference for candidates who have completed core coursework in structural analysis, transportation, hydrology, or geotechnical engineering. Proficiency with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or MicroStation is frequently listed as a requirement. Candidates applying for transportation-focused offices should highlight any highway design or traffic analysis coursework specifically.
How do I time my OPT and H-1B filing if I get a return offer from Michael Baker International?
USCIS opens H-1B registration in March for an October 1 start date. If your internship ends in August and you receive a return offer, your employer needs to register you in the March window before your start date. Post-completion OPT covers the gap between graduation and the October H-1B start, provided you apply for OPT at least 90 days before your program end date and USCIS approves your EAD in time.
