Frame your credentials around failure analysis
Exponent's structural work centers on forensic investigation and litigation support, not construction management. Tailor your resume to highlight root cause analysis, materials testing, and report writing rather than project delivery milestones.
Verify your visa type before applying
Exponent sponsors H-1B, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and TN visas. If you're on OPT, confirm your STEM extension eligibility before your standard 12-month window closes, since Exponent's hiring timeline for technical consulting roles can run several months.
Target practice groups that match your discipline
Exponent organizes hiring by technical practice area. Structural Engineers typically slot into the Mechanical or Civil Engineering groups. Applying directly to the relevant practice increases your odds of reaching a hiring manager who understands specialty occupation criteria for your role.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Exponent's open roles
Structural Engineer openings at consulting firms like Exponent are posted inconsistently across job boards. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Exponent roles that include visa sponsorship, so you're only spending time on positions where sponsorship is confirmed.
Get your PE license status sorted before interviews
Many of Exponent's structural litigation projects require or strongly prefer a Professional Engineer license. If you're on an F-1 or H-1B, confirm whether your state board accepts international transcripts, since delays in PE eligibility can complicate the specialty occupation argument USCIS evaluates during H-1B adjudication.
Ask the recruiter about LCA filing timing at offer stage
Once Exponent extends an offer, your employer must file a Labor Condition Application with DOL before submitting your H-1B petition to USCIS. Confirm the expected filing timeline with your recruiter early, especially if your current work authorization has a hard expiration date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Exponent sponsor H-1B visas for Structural Engineers?
Yes, Exponent sponsors H-1B visas for Structural Engineers. The role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation given the degree requirements in civil or structural engineering. Your employer will need to file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL and submit an H-1B petition to USCIS. If you're subject to the annual cap, timing your application to the April filing window is essential.
How do I apply for Structural Engineer jobs at Exponent?
Applications go through Exponent's careers portal, where roles are organized by technical practice area. Structural Engineer positions typically appear under Civil Engineering or Mechanical Engineering practice groups. Browse current openings filtered by sponsorship eligibility on Migrate Mate to identify which roles are actively accepting international candidates before you apply.
Which visa types does Exponent commonly use for Structural Engineer roles?
Exponent sponsors H-1B, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, and TN visas for engineering roles. F-1 OPT is common for recent graduates entering the firm, with STEM OPT extensions available given the technical nature of structural consulting work. TN visas apply to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering categories. H-1B remains the primary long-term sponsorship path.
What qualifications does Exponent expect for Structural Engineer candidates?
Exponent's structural roles lean heavily on forensic and analytical work, so a graduate degree in civil or structural engineering is common, particularly for roles involving expert witness support or failure investigation. Hands-on experience with finite element analysis, materials behavior, or construction defect cases strengthens your profile significantly. A Professional Engineer license is preferred for senior-level positions.
How long does the sponsorship process take for a Structural Engineer at Exponent?
If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT to H-1B, the process runs on USCIS's annual cap cycle, with petitions filed in April for an October 1 start date. Premium processing through USCIS can reduce the adjudication window to roughly 15 business days. Factor in DOL Labor Condition Application processing, which typically takes seven business days, before the H-1B petition can be filed.
