Align your degree to specialty occupation standards
Kiewit's Project Engineer roles typically require a civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering degree. Confirm your credential maps directly to the role's field before applying. A general engineering degree with unrelated coursework can complicate H-1B specialty occupation determinations.
Target Kiewit's energy division specifically
Kiewit organizes hiring by business unit. Focus your applications on their Power, Oil, Gas, and Chemical divisions, where Project Engineer demand is concentrated. Roles in these units are more likely to involve the long-term project cycles that justify sponsorship investment.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open Project Engineer roles
Kiewit posts Project Engineer openings across multiple locations simultaneously. Search Migrate Mate to filter these roles by visa type and location so you're applying to positions where sponsorship is already confirmed, not requesting it cold.
Clarify OPT or CPT eligibility before your start date
Kiewit participates in E-Verify, which is required for F-1 OPT employment authorization. Confirm your OPT authorization dates and EAD card arrival timeline before accepting an offer, since construction project start dates are often fixed and delays create real scheduling problems.
Negotiate your start date around H-1B cap timing
If Kiewit files an H-1B petition for you, the October 1 cap-subject start date is fixed by USCIS. Build this into your offer conversation early. Kiewit's multi-year projects often allow for adjusted onboarding, but you need to raise it before the offer is finalized.
Understand how PERM affects long-term planning
Kiewit sponsors Green Cards for engineers through the PERM labor certification process. DOL requires employers to document that no qualified U.S. workers were available. Starting this process early in your tenure matters, especially if you're from a high-backlog country like India.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Kiewit sponsor H-1B visas for Project Engineers?
Yes, Kiewit sponsors H-1B visas for Project Engineers. The role qualifies as a specialty occupation given the engineering degree requirement, which is a core H-1B eligibility criterion. Kiewit operates across energy and infrastructure sectors where multi-year project timelines make long-term sponsorship commitments practical. Your degree field should align directly with the engineering discipline the role requires.
Which visa types are commonly used for Project Engineer roles at Kiewit?
Project Engineers at Kiewit are sponsored across several visa categories. H-1B is the most common pathway for full-time hires. F-1 OPT and CPT are used for students and recent graduates entering the workforce. TN visas are available for Canadian and Mexican engineers under qualifying USMCA classifications. Green Card sponsorship through EB-2 or EB-3 is available for engineers further along in their careers.
What qualifications and experience does Kiewit expect for Project Engineers?
Kiewit typically hires Project Engineers with a bachelor's degree in civil, mechanical, electrical, or construction engineering. Entry-level roles are open to recent graduates, while mid-level positions expect two to five years of field or construction management experience. Familiarity with energy project environments, such as power plant construction or pipeline work, strengthens your application considerably.
How do I apply for Project Engineer jobs at Kiewit?
You can browse open Project Engineer roles at Kiewit on Migrate Mate, which filters positions by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm eligibility before applying. Kiewit also posts directly on its careers site. Applications typically involve submitting a resume and completing an online profile. For sponsored roles, Kiewit's recruiting team handles visa paperwork after an offer is extended.
How do I plan my timeline if Kiewit is filing an H-1B for me?
H-1B petitions for cap-subject candidates are filed in April for an October 1 start date. If you're on F-1 OPT, your OPT authorization needs to bridge the gap between graduation and October 1. If your OPT expires before October 1 and you're selected in the lottery, a cap-gap extension under USCIS rules covers your work authorization during that period automatically.
