Align Your Credentials to Kiewit's Project Types
Kiewit Field Engineers work on power generation, pipeline, and heavy civil projects. Frame your resume around hands-on site experience in energy or industrial construction, since office-based engineering experience carries less weight here.
Target Rotational Programs for Earlier Entry
Kiewit's Field Engineer hiring often flows through structured rotational programs designed for new graduates. Applying directly to these programs, rather than posted project roles, puts you in a pipeline that's built around sponsoring early-career international hires.
Confirm OPT STEM Extension Eligibility Before Applying
Civil and construction engineering degrees typically qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. Verify your program's CIP code through your DSO before accepting an offer, so Kiewit's HR team can plan your work authorization timeline accurately.
Understand How Project-Based Hiring Affects H-1B Timing
Kiewit ties many Field Engineer offers to specific project starts. If your H-1B filing window and a project's mobilization date don't align, negotiate a start date that lands after October 1 to avoid gaps in authorized employment.
Use Migrate Mate to Filter Kiewit Field Engineer Openings by Visa Type
Kiewit posts Field Engineer roles across dozens of locations and project types simultaneously. Use Migrate Mate to filter active openings by the visa categories Kiewit sponsors, so you're applying to roles where your specific status is already supported.
Prepare for DOL Prevailing Wage Requirements Early
For H-1B and PERM filings, DOL prevailing wages for Field Engineers vary significantly by project location. Ask your offer contact which wage level Kiewit intends to file under, since a Level I filing for a senior site role can create downstream Green Card complications.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Kiewit sponsor H-1B visas for Field Engineers?
Yes, Kiewit sponsors H-1B visas for Field Engineers. The company has a consistent track record of filing H-1B petitions for engineering hires in its energy and construction divisions. Sponsorship is most common for candidates entering through structured Field Engineer programs or joining projects where a qualifying specialty occupation role is clearly defined. Your employer files the H-1B petition with USCIS on your behalf.
How do I apply for Field Engineer jobs at Kiewit?
Applications go through Kiewit's careers portal, where Field Engineer roles are posted by district and project type. Many entry-level Field Engineer positions are tied to Kiewit's rotational development program, so filtering for those specifically gives you the highest chance of landing a sponsorship-eligible offer. You can also browse active Kiewit Field Engineer openings filtered by visa type on Migrate Mate.
Which visa types does Kiewit commonly use for Field Engineers?
Kiewit sponsors a range of visa types for Field Engineers, including H-1B, F-1 OPT and CPT for students and recent graduates, TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals, J-1 visa for training programs, and employment-based Green Cards through EB-2 or EB-3 for longer-term hires. The right category depends on your nationality, degree, and where you are in your career when you receive an offer.
What qualifications does Kiewit expect for Field Engineer roles?
Kiewit typically looks for a bachelor's degree in civil, mechanical, electrical, or construction engineering. For visa sponsorship purposes, the degree field needs to align directly with the role's duties to satisfy the H-1B specialty occupation requirement. Hands-on site experience in power, pipeline, or heavy industrial construction strengthens your application significantly, since Kiewit's Field Engineers are embedded on active jobsites from day one.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Kiewit Field Engineer offer?
Timeline depends on your visa category. F-1 OPT authorization through USCIS can take up to 90 days, so apply early if your graduation date is approaching. H-1B petitions have an October 1 start date tied to the annual cap, meaning offers made in spring may not convert to H-1B status until the following fall. PERM-based Green Card processes typically run one to three years and usually begin after you've established tenure in the role.
