Frame your experience around critical infrastructure
Kiewit's software roles support energy and construction operations, not consumer products. Tailor your resume to highlight systems reliability, large-scale data pipelines, or operational tooling experience so your background maps directly to what their engineering teams build.
Verify your degree aligns with the specialty occupation standard
H-1B eligibility for Lead Software Engineer roles requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field. A degree in computer science or software engineering is straightforward. A degree in an unrelated discipline needs a clear connection to your technical role documented before USCIS filing.
Target Kiewit's technology division roles specifically
Kiewit posts Lead Software Engineer openings across multiple business units. Roles sitting inside their technology and digital innovation groups are more likely to involve the enterprise-scale systems work that justifies senior-level sponsorship petitions compared to field-embedded project roles.
Search open roles using Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters job listings by visa type and sponsorship history, so you can find current Lead Software Engineer openings at Kiewit that match your visa situation without sorting through roles that won't support your status.
Ask about LCA filing timelines before accepting an offer
Your employer must file a certified Labor Condition Application with the DOL before USCIS can process your H-1B petition. Confirm Kiewit's internal HR timeline for initiating that filing so you can align your start date with realistic processing windows, especially if you need a status change.
Use OPT strategically if you are on F-1 status
If you are currently in F-1 OPT, starting at Kiewit before the April H-1B registration window lets your employer file on your behalf in the same cycle. Missing that window means waiting a full year, so coordinate your graduation and offer timing carefully.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Kiewit sponsor H-1B visas for Lead Software Engineers?
Yes, Kiewit sponsors H-1B visas for Lead Software Engineer roles. The company operates in energy and infrastructure sectors where specialized technical talent is consistently in demand, and their HR teams are experienced with the H-1B petition process. Sponsorship is most common for roles within their technology and digital operations groups rather than project-embedded field positions.
How do I apply for Lead Software Engineer jobs at Kiewit?
Applications go through Kiewit's careers portal, where you can filter by job function and location. Before applying, confirm the posting indicates visa sponsorship is available, since not every opening in the same job family will be sponsored. Migrate Mate lets you browse verified Lead Software Engineer openings at Kiewit filtered by visa type so you spend time on roles that match your sponsorship needs.
Which visa types does Kiewit commonly use for Lead Software Engineer roles?
Kiewit sponsors H-1B visas for most Lead Software Engineer hires requiring work authorization. They also support F-1 OPT and CPT for students transitioning into full-time roles, TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying software occupations, and Green Card pathways including EB-2 and EB-3 for long-term hires through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications does Kiewit expect for Lead Software Engineer roles?
Kiewit looks for candidates with a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, combined with several years of hands-on software development experience. Given the energy and infrastructure context, familiarity with enterprise systems, APIs, or operational data platforms is a practical differentiator. Leadership experience managing technical work or mentoring engineers strengthens a senior-level application significantly.
How do I time my application around the H-1B cap and filing deadlines?
USCIS opens H-1B registration each March for the fiscal year starting October 1. If you are on F-1 OPT, you need an active offer from Kiewit before the registration window opens so they can submit your entry. If selected in the lottery, your petition is filed between April and June, with work authorization starting October 1 at the earliest unless you qualify for the cap-exempt pathway.
