Align your credentials to NEC and NESC standards
Kiewit's substation work involves compliance with the National Electrical Code and National Electrical Safety Code. Having these standards reflected in your resume and credentials signals technical readiness before your first interview, which strengthens both your candidacy and your visa petition.
Target Kiewit's Power Delivery business unit directly
Substation Engineer openings at Kiewit are concentrated in the Power Delivery division. Searching that unit specifically filters out unrelated construction roles and puts your application in front of hiring managers who regularly work with sponsored international engineers.
Request LCA filing before your offer letter expires
The DOL Labor Condition Application must be certified before USCIS can process your H-1B petition. Ask your Kiewit recruiter early in the offer stage which immigration counsel they use, so LCA prep starts before your offer window closes.
Use Migrate Mate to surface active Kiewit openings
Substation Engineer roles at Kiewit open and close quickly across regional project sites. Use Migrate Mate to track current openings filtered by visa sponsorship, so you apply while positions are still active rather than after internal referrals fill them.
Document your PE licensure pathway before interviews
Many Kiewit Substation Engineer roles expect progress toward or attainment of a Professional Engineer license. Bring a clear timeline showing your EIT status and exam schedule. This directly supports the specialty occupation case in your H-1B petition.
Understand TN eligibility if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship
Electrical engineers qualify for TN status under USMCA, and Kiewit has projects in locations where TN processing at a port of entry is faster than H-1B cap-subject timelines. Confirm with the company's immigration team whether your role qualifies under the TN engineer category.

Find Substation Engineer at Kiewit JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does Kiewit sponsor H-1B visas for Substation Engineers?
Yes. Kiewit sponsors H-1B visas for Substation Engineers, and the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation given the degree requirement in electrical engineering or a closely related field. Kiewit works with outside immigration counsel to manage LCA filing with the DOL and the I-129 petition with USCIS, so you'll coordinate through their HR or legal team once an offer is extended.
How do I apply for Substation Engineer jobs at Kiewit?
Applications go through Kiewit's careers portal, but openings in the Power Delivery division fill quickly and aren't always easy to track across regional project sites. Migrate Mate aggregates Kiewit's active Substation Engineer roles filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility, making it easier to find and apply to current openings without manually checking multiple pages. Tailor your resume to highlight high-voltage substation design and relevant standards experience.
Which visa types does Kiewit commonly use for Substation Engineer roles?
Kiewit sponsors H-1B visas most commonly for Substation Engineers, along with Green Card pathways through PERM-based EB-2 and EB-3 labor certification. Canadian and Mexican nationals may be eligible for TN status under the engineer category, which avoids the H-1B cap and lottery. F-1 OPT and CPT candidates are also considered, particularly for early-career roles tied to engineering degree programs.
What qualifications does Kiewit expect for sponsored Substation Engineer positions?
Kiewit typically requires a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, with coursework or experience in power systems, protective relaying, or substation design using tools like AutoCAD or ETAP. Progress toward a Professional Engineer license is a strong differentiator. For H-1B purposes, your degree field must align directly with the substation engineering duties in the role, not just with engineering broadly.
How do I estimate the timeline for getting sponsored through Kiewit as a Substation Engineer?
After an offer, Kiewit's immigration team typically begins the DOL Labor Condition Application, which takes seven business days under standard processing. USCIS then processes the I-129 petition, which runs roughly three to six months without premium processing or two to four weeks with it. If you're in F-1 OPT status, confirm your OPT end date early so Kiewit can time the petition to maintain continuous work authorization.
