Align your credentials with PE licensing expectations
Kiewit's substation roles often progress toward licensed Professional Engineer status. Before applying, verify your foreign engineering degree is evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluator, since this documentation will be needed for both your job application and any future PERM-based Green Card filing.
Target Kiewit's power delivery project pipelines
Kiewit staffs substation engineers around active transmission and distribution contracts, not just open requisitions. Research which utility clients Kiewit is currently serving in your target region, since hiring demand for substation engineers follows awarded project cycles, not steady corporate headcount.
Use Migrate Mate to filter Kiewit's open substation roles
Kiewit posts substation engineering positions across multiple business units and regions, making it easy to miss relevant openings. Use Migrate Mate to filter Kiewit roles specifically tagged for visa sponsorship so you're only applying to positions where your work authorization status is already accounted for.
Clarify your OPT STEM extension eligibility early
Electrical engineering degrees qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you up to three years of F-1 OPT work authorization. Confirm with your DSO that your degree CIP code is on the STEM OPT designated list before accepting an offer, since this window is critical for bridging to an H-1B.
Understand how Kiewit structures H-1B filings for project-based roles
Because Kiewit deploys engineers across project sites, your H-1B petition will likely list multiple worksites or a central corporate location. USCIS requires Labor Condition Applications that reflect where you'll actually work, so confirm with Kiewit's immigration team how they handle LCA compliance for field-assigned substation engineers.
Prepare your PERM documentation for design-focused positions
Substation engineer roles that require specialized software proficiency, such as ETAP or AutoCAD for protection and relay design, can support stronger PERM job descriptions. Work with your employer's immigration counsel to ensure the DOL recruitment requirements accurately reflect the technical depth of your role.

Does Kiewit sponsor H-1B visas for Substation Electrical Engineers?
Yes, Kiewit sponsors H-1B visas for Substation Electrical Engineers. The company has a consistent track record of filing H-1B petitions for engineering roles across its power and energy business units. Because substation positions require specialized technical expertise, they generally satisfy the specialty occupation standard USCIS applies to H-1B petitions.
How do I apply for Substation Electrical Engineer jobs at Kiewit?
You can apply directly through Kiewit's careers portal or browse their open substation engineering positions on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for roles where visa sponsorship is available. When applying, tailor your resume to reflect high-voltage substation design experience, relevant software proficiency, and any exposure to utility or transmission clients Kiewit works with.
Which visa types does Kiewit commonly use for Substation Electrical Engineers?
Kiewit sponsors multiple visa categories for this role. H-1B is the most common path for experienced engineers. F-1 OPT and CPT are used for recent graduates, with STEM OPT providing additional runway before an H-1B cap filing. TN visas are an option for Canadian and Mexican nationals. For long-term immigration, Kiewit supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process.
What qualifications does Kiewit expect for Substation Electrical Engineer roles?
Kiewit typically looks for a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with coursework or direct experience in power systems, protection and controls, or substation design. Proficiency in tools like ETAP, AutoCAD, or relay coordination software strengthens your candidacy. Roles on active transmission or utility projects may also require familiarity with NERC standards and the ability to work across field and office environments.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Kiewit Substation Electrical Engineer offer?
Timeline depends on visa type. H-1B cap filings follow USCIS's April lottery and October 1 start date, meaning you may wait six or more months from offer to start if you're cap-subject. STEM OPT extensions can be processed within 90 days of your OPT end date. PERM labor certification for Green Card sponsorship typically runs 12 to 18 months at the DOL before an I-140 petition is filed.
