Align Your Credentials With OSHA Requirements
Kiewit's energy projects require site safety professionals who meet OSHA 30-hour construction standards at minimum. Having a CSP, ASP, or CHST certification strengthens your profile and signals you can step onto a job site without a compliance gap.
Target Kiewit's Energy Division Openings Directly
Kiewit posts Safety Specialist roles by business unit, so filter for their power and energy divisions specifically. These projects run on longer timelines, which makes them more amenable to sponsorship because the hiring horizon justifies the investment.
Understand How TN Status Fits Safety Roles
If you're Canadian or Mexican, a TN visa can cover Safety Specialist work when the role aligns with a qualifying occupational category. Confirm the job description maps to an accepted classification before your offer is finalized, since TN processing happens at the border.
Ask About LCA Timelines Before Accepting an Offer
Kiewit must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before submitting your H-1B petition to USCIS. Ask your recruiter where this sits in their standard onboarding timeline so your start date accounts for the full filing window.
Use Migrate Mate to Find Open Safety Roles
Searching broadly misses roles that explicitly support sponsorship. Use Migrate Mate to filter Safety Specialist openings at Kiewit by visa type, so you're applying to positions where sponsorship is already confirmed rather than negotiating it from scratch.
Document Field Experience on Energy Job Sites
Kiewit evaluates Safety Specialists on hands-on site experience, not just credentials. When preparing your resume and interview materials, quantify your exposure to high-hazard environments like electrical generation, pipeline construction, or heavy industrial settings.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Kiewit sponsor H-1B visas for Safety Specialists?
Yes, Kiewit sponsors H-1B visas for Safety Specialist roles. The process requires Kiewit to first file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL, then submit an H-1B petition to USCIS on your behalf. Because H-1B cap-subject petitions are subject to an annual lottery, timing your application cycle and confirming your role qualifies as a specialty occupation are both critical steps before accepting an offer.
How do I apply for Safety Specialist jobs at Kiewit?
Applications go through Kiewit's careers portal, where roles are listed by business unit and project type. Focus on openings within their power and energy divisions if you're targeting long-term project assignments. Migrate Mate also lists open Safety Specialist positions at Kiewit filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility, which saves time if you need to confirm sponsorship support upfront before applying.
Which visa types are commonly used for Safety Specialist roles at Kiewit?
H-1B is the most common pathway for long-term employment, but Kiewit also supports F-1 OPT and CPT for recent graduates and TN visa status for Canadian and Mexican nationals whose role maps to a qualifying occupational category. EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship is available for candidates moving toward permanent residence after establishing themselves in the role.
What qualifications does Kiewit expect for Safety Specialist roles?
Kiewit typically looks for a degree in occupational health and safety, environmental health, or a related field, combined with hands-on experience on construction or industrial job sites. OSHA 30-hour certification is a baseline expectation. Professional credentials like CSP or CHST are competitive differentiators, particularly for roles supporting high-hazard energy infrastructure projects.
How do I plan my timeline if Kiewit is filing an H-1B for me?
USCIS opens the H-1B registration window each March for a lottery draw. If selected, petitions are filed with an October 1 start date. Factor in two to four weeks for DOL LCA certification before the petition can be submitted. If you're on F-1 OPT when hired, confirm your OPT expiration date and whether a STEM extension or cap-gap period will bridge the gap to your H-1B start date.
