Align your credentials to U.S. power standards
Westwood's substation work often involves NERC, IEEE, and NESC compliance. Frame your resume around these standards explicitly, even if your background used equivalent international codes. Reviewers hiring for U.S. grid projects look for that direct terminology match.
Target Westwood's power delivery practice specifically
Westwood operates across multiple engineering disciplines. Substation Engineer openings sit within their power delivery and utility consulting practice, so filter your search and outreach to that group rather than applying broadly across all engineering roles.
Get your professional engineering documentation ready early
A PE license or documented progress toward one strengthens your H-1B specialty occupation case for substation roles. USCIS scrutinizes whether the position requires a specific degree field, so having your credentials evaluated by NCES before the offer stage removes a common bottleneck.
Use Migrate Mate to find open Substation Engineer roles
Westwood posts substation roles across multiple locations, and availability shifts with project pipelines. Use Migrate Mate to browse current openings filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility so you're applying to roles where sponsorship is already on the table.
Clarify TN eligibility if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship
Substation Engineers can qualify under the TN visa as engineers, which bypasses the H-1B cap and lottery entirely. If you're Canadian or Mexican, confirm with Westwood's HR team early whether they'll support TN status, since it's a faster path with no annual filing wait.
Understand the LCA filing step before your start date
Before Westwood can file your H-1B petition with USCIS, they must submit a Labor Condition Application to the DOL certifying your offered wage meets the prevailing rate for your work location. Build at least two to three weeks into your timeline for LCA certification before the I-129 can be filed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Westwood Professional Services sponsor H-1B visas for Substation Engineers?
Yes, Westwood Professional Services sponsors H-1B visas for Substation Engineer roles. The H-1B is the most common path for international candidates in this function, since the role qualifies as a specialty occupation under USCIS standards given its degree requirements in electrical engineering or a related field. Sponsorship availability can vary by project need and location, so confirming with the hiring team during the offer stage is the practical next step.
How do I apply for Substation Engineer jobs at Westwood Professional Services?
You can find and apply for Substation Engineer openings at Westwood through Migrate Mate, which lists their current roles filtered by visa sponsorship eligibility. Westwood's hiring process for engineering roles typically involves a technical screen focused on protection and control systems, relay coordination, and substation design experience, followed by panel interviews with their power delivery practice leads.
Which visa types does Westwood Professional Services commonly use for Substation Engineers?
Westwood sponsors H-1B, TN visa, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, J-1 visa, and EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card pathways for Substation Engineers. F-1 OPT and CPT are common entry points for recent graduates, while TN visa is often the fastest route for Canadian and Mexican nationals. The H-1B is the standard long-term option, with EB-2 or EB-3 sponsorship available for candidates on a permanent residency track.
What qualifications does Westwood Professional Services expect for Substation Engineer roles?
Westwood's Substation Engineer roles typically require a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, with hands-on experience in protection and control design, relay settings, and AutoCAD or similar drafting tools. Familiarity with utility client requirements and NERC standards is a strong advantage. Candidates with a PE license or active EIT status are generally preferred, and some senior roles specify experience with high-voltage substation projects.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Substation Engineer role at Westwood?
Timeline depends on visa type. F-1 OPT can authorize work within a few weeks of an offer. TN status for Canadian nationals can be obtained at the border on the day of travel. H-1B petitions filed under the regular cap require USCIS to open the April lottery window, with employment starting October 1 at the earliest. Premium processing through USCIS can reduce the adjudication period to 15 business days once the petition is filed, but the cap-subject timeline still applies.
