Obtain OSHA and NFPA credentials first
Westwood evaluates Substation Electricians on job-ready safety qualifications. Having OSHA 30 and NFPA 70E certifications documented before you apply signals you can operate on live electrical systems from day one, not after onboarding.
Target Westwood's utility consulting project pipeline
Westwood staffs Substation Electricians against active project awards, not standing headcount. Watch for utility contract announcements in their service regions and apply when project-specific openings post, since those roles have clearer sponsorship timelines tied to project start dates.
Clarify LCA wage tier during the offer stage
Before accepting an H-1B offer, ask Westwood's HR team which DOL prevailing wage tier your role is classified under. Substation Electrician wages vary significantly by geography and experience level, and your offered salary must meet or exceed the certified LCA wage.
Use Migrate Mate to filter open roles by visa type
Westwood posts Substation Electrician roles across multiple job boards, but not all listings flag sponsorship availability. Use Migrate Mate to filter Westwood openings specifically by the visa types they sponsor so you're only applying to roles where your status is already accommodated.
Align your F-1 OPT start date with project needs
If you're on F-1 OPT, Westwood's project-driven hiring means your available start date matters as much as your qualifications. Coordinate your OPT authorization timeline with DSO at least 90 days out so your work authorization is active when a project role opens.
Prepare a PERM-ready employment history file early
If your goal is an EB-2 or EB-3 Green Card through Westwood, PERM requires a detailed documented employment history showing qualifying experience. Gather W-2s, employer verification letters, and job descriptions for every relevant role before the recruitment process begins.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Westwood Professional Services sponsor H-1B visas for Substation Electricians?
Yes, Westwood Professional Services sponsors H-1B visas for Substation Electrician roles. The H-1B requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation, which typically means a bachelor's degree or equivalent in electrical engineering or a closely related field. Westwood's project-based hiring means H-1B sponsorship is generally tied to specific contract awards, so timing your application to active project openings improves your chances.
How do I apply for Substation Electrician jobs at Westwood Professional Services?
You can browse and apply for Substation Electrician openings at Westwood Professional Services directly through Migrate Mate, which filters roles by visa sponsorship type so you can confirm eligibility before applying. When you apply, tailor your resume to reflect substation-specific experience including switchgear, protection relays, and transformer work, as these are the qualifications Westwood's hiring teams screen for first.
Which visa types does Westwood Professional Services commonly use for Substation Electrician roles?
Westwood sponsors H-1B, TN visa, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, J-1 visa, and EB-2 or EB-3 immigrant visas for Substation Electrician roles. TN visa is a practical option for Canadian and Mexican nationals given the faster processing and no lottery. F-1 OPT and CPT work well for recent graduates entering the role. EB-2 and EB-3 are the longer-term Green Card pathways for candidates seeking permanent residence through employment.
What qualifications and experience does Westwood look for in sponsored Substation Electrician candidates?
Westwood typically looks for hands-on experience with high-voltage substation equipment, including transformer maintenance, circuit breaker testing, and protective relay commissioning. A degree in electrical engineering or an equivalent technical credential is generally required to support specialty occupation classification under H-1B. OSHA 30 certification and NFPA 70E familiarity are common screening criteria, and candidates with utility or energy sector backgrounds in a consulting context are prioritized.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a Substation Electrician role at Westwood?
Timeline depends on visa type. H-1B petitions filed in the annual April lottery have an October 1 start date if selected, meaning you could wait six months or more between offer and authorization. TN status for Canadian nationals can be obtained at the border in a single day. EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship through PERM typically takes one to three years depending on your priority date and country of birth.
