Align your credentials to U.S. power standards
WSP's substation work references IEEE and NERC standards throughout the project lifecycle. Frame your resume around protection schemes, relay coordination, and substation design using U.S. terminology, not just international equivalents, before you apply.
Target WSP's grid and energy service lines
WSP structures its electrical engineering hiring around distinct verticals. Substation Engineer openings appear most consistently within its Grid Services and Energy Transition practices, so filter your search to those groups rather than casting wide across the whole firm.
Flag your PE licensure status early in interviews
WSP's consulting model often requires sealed drawings on utility-facing projects. Being licensed or actively pursuing a Professional Engineer license in a relevant state can directly influence which project teams will consider sponsoring a visa petition for your role.
Understand how PERM shapes your long-term path
WSP sponsors EB-2 and EB-3 Green Cards for engineering staff, but PERM labor certification requires documented recruitment before your position is approved. Ask your HR contact when that process typically starts relative to your hire date so you can plan your timeline realistically.
Use Migrate Mate to find open WSP substation roles
Substation Engineer openings at WSP are distributed across regional offices and are not always easy to track centrally. Use Migrate Mate to filter WSP's current openings by visa sponsorship type and location so you can prioritize applications strategically.

Find Substation Engineer at WSP JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does WSP sponsor H-1B visas for Substation Engineers?
Yes, WSP sponsors H-1B visas for Substation Engineers. As a large engineering and consulting firm, WSP routinely files H-1B petitions for engineering staff, including those in power and substation roles. If you're transitioning from F-1 OPT, confirm your OPT expiry against the H-1B cap timeline with your recruiter before accepting an offer, since cap-subject petitions only take effect on October 1.
How do I apply for Substation Engineer jobs at WSP?
Apply directly through WSP's careers portal, where openings are posted by region and service line. Focus your search on the Grid Services and Energy Transition practices, where substation roles are concentrated. You can also use Migrate Mate to browse WSP's current Substation Engineer openings filtered by visa sponsorship type, which helps you prioritize roles where sponsorship is explicitly supported.
Which visa types does WSP commonly sponsor for Substation Engineers?
WSP sponsors a range of visa types for this role, including H-1B, E-3 (for Australian citizens), TN (for Canadian and Mexican nationals), and F-1 OPT and CPT for students in active programs. For longer-term pathways, WSP also supports EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card sponsorship for engineering staff who meet PERM labor certification requirements.
What qualifications does WSP expect for Substation Engineer roles?
WSP typically looks for a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and hands-on experience with substation design, protection and control systems, or relay coordination. Familiarity with IEEE and NERC standards is expected. A Professional Engineer license, or active progress toward one, strengthens your candidacy significantly, particularly for client-facing or utility project work where sealed drawings are required.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take for a WSP engineering hire?
For H-1B transfers or new cap-subject petitions, USCIS standard processing runs several months, with a premium processing option available for faster adjudication. E-3 and TN petitions generally move faster. If WSP initiates PERM-based Green Card sponsorship, the full EB-2 or EB-3 process, from labor certification through I-140 approval, typically spans one to several years depending on your country of birth and priority date.
