Align your credentials with PE licensure expectations
Olsson's structural roles often require or anticipate Professional Engineer licensure. Before applying, confirm your foreign engineering degree is evaluated by a NACES-approved credential evaluator so your academic background translates cleanly into U.S. licensing requirements.
Target Olsson offices in infrastructure-heavy markets
Olsson staffs structural engineers across transportation, municipal, and site development projects. Offices in states with active DOT or public works pipelines tend to have more consistent hiring demand, which matters if your OPT clock is running.
Clarify TN eligibility early in conversations
Canadian and Mexican engineers often qualify for TN status under the engineer category without waiting for H-1B season. Raise this with Olsson's recruiting team before your first interview so the process timeline stays realistic for both sides.
Use Migrate Mate to identify active Structural Engineer openings
Olsson posts roles across multiple locations and project types simultaneously. Use Migrate Mate to filter specifically for Structural Engineer positions at Olsson that are open to sponsored candidates, so you're applying to roles with active hiring intent.
Prepare your I-129 documentation before the offer stage
H-1B petitions for engineering roles require a detailed specialty occupation justification. Work with an immigration attorney ahead of your offer to gather project portfolios, degree equivalency letters, and job duty descriptions that support USCIS's specialty occupation standard.
Confirm the LCA wage level matches your role scope
DOL Labor Condition Applications assign prevailing wage levels based on job duties, not just title. If your Structural Engineer role involves independent design responsibility versus supervised drafting work, the wage level and filing timeline can differ significantly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Olsson sponsor H-1B visas for Structural Engineers?
Yes, Olsson sponsors H-1B visas for Structural Engineers. The company works with international candidates across its engineering practices, and structural roles qualify as specialty occupations under USCIS guidelines given the degree requirements in civil or structural engineering. If you're currently on OPT, Olsson can bridge you through an H-1B petition filed in the annual April cap season.
How do I apply for Structural Engineer jobs at Olsson?
You can browse and apply for Structural Engineer positions at Olsson directly through their careers page or through Migrate Mate, which filters for roles open to visa-sponsored candidates. When applying, tailor your resume to reflect the specific project types Olsson handles, such as transportation, site development, or municipal infrastructure, since hiring managers screen for relevant domain experience.
Which visa types does Olsson commonly use for Structural Engineer roles?
Olsson sponsors H-1B, F-1 OPT, F-1 CPT, TN, and J-1 visas for engineering roles. For Structural Engineers, H-1B and TN are the most practical long-term pathways. TN is available to Canadian and Mexican nationals and can often be arranged faster than an H-1B petition, making it a strong option if timing is a concern.
What qualifications does Olsson expect for Structural Engineer positions?
Olsson typically looks for a bachelor's or master's degree in civil or structural engineering from an accredited program. For mid-level and senior roles, relevant project experience in structural analysis, design software such as RISA or SAP2000, and progress toward Professional Engineer licensure are common expectations. Foreign degree holders should have credentials evaluated by a NACES-approved organization before applying.
How do I plan my timeline when pursuing an H-1B through Olsson?
H-1B cap petitions are filed in April for an October 1 start date. If you're finishing OPT, confirm your OPT expiration date and factor in the 60-day grace period. Olsson would need to complete a DOL Labor Condition Application and file your I-129 with USCIS before the registration window closes. Starting conversations with recruiters in the preceding fall gives you the most realistic runway.
