Align your credentials to Microsoft's hardware org
Microsoft's Electrical Engineer openings cluster around silicon, power electronics, and PCB design for devices and cloud hardware. Tailor your resume to reflect specific tools and methodologies used in those domains, like signal integrity analysis or FPGA development, before applying.
Target teams with active hardware roadmaps
Microsoft's Devices and Silicon Engineering groups hire Electrical Engineers in cycles tied to product releases. Applying when a team has open headcount tied to a hardware milestone increases your chances of moving quickly through the interview loop.
Understand how Microsoft's LCA filing works
Microsoft files a Labor Condition Application with the DOL before submitting your H-1B petition. The LCA locks in your prevailing wage level and work location, so confirm your assigned office early since remote or hybrid arrangements can affect the filing.
Use Migrate Mate to identify active Electrical Engineer openings
Sponsorship-eligible roles at large employers like Microsoft don't always stay posted for long. Use Migrate Mate to filter for Electrical Engineer positions at Microsoft that explicitly support visa sponsorship, so you're applying to confirmed opportunities.
Account for H-1B cap timing if you're not already in status
If you're outside the U.S. or not currently in H-1B status, Microsoft can only file your cap-subject petition during the April registration window for an October 1 start date. Build that timeline into your job search so you're not caught mid-process.

Does Microsoft sponsor H-1B visas for Electrical Engineers?
Yes, Microsoft sponsors H-1B visas for Electrical Engineers and has a well-established process for doing so. Their in-house immigration team handles the full petition process, including the Labor Condition Application filed with the DOL. If you're subject to the H-1B cap, your petition would be submitted in the April registration window for an October 1 start date.
How do I apply for Electrical Engineer jobs at Microsoft?
Applications go through Microsoft's careers portal at careers.microsoft.com, where you can filter by job function and location. Roles in hardware, silicon, and devices engineering are the most common fits for Electrical Engineers. You can also browse verified sponsorship-eligible openings through Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for positions that support work visa candidates.
Which visa types does Microsoft typically sponsor for Electrical Engineers?
Microsoft sponsors H-1B, E-3, and H-1B1 visas for nonimmigrant work authorization, as well as EB-2 and EB-3 Green Card categories for permanent residence. Australian citizens are eligible for the E-3 visa, which has no lottery and allows faster processing. The right visa type depends on your nationality, current status, and how quickly you need to start.
What qualifications does Microsoft expect from Electrical Engineer candidates?
Most Electrical Engineer roles at Microsoft require a bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field. For hardware and silicon roles, hands-on experience with PCB design, power systems, signal integrity, or FPGA development is typically expected. Senior roles often require demonstrated experience shipping hardware products, not just academic or internship-level exposure.
How long does the visa sponsorship process take after receiving an offer from Microsoft?
Timeline depends on your visa type and current status. E-3 and H-1B1 applicants can often get consular appointments within a few weeks of receiving a certified LCA from the DOL. H-1B transfers for candidates already in H-1B status can start quickly. Cap-subject H-1B candidates face the longest path, waiting until the October 1 start date following an April lottery.
